POWER Referendum
| |
The POWER Initiative will establish an on-campus resource center aimed at lowering dropout rates, improving 4-year graduation rates and improving the academic preparedness and success of students. Through student-initiated academic preparation and retention programs, POWER will help students streamline their educational experience at UC Irvine. POWER will provide students with a unique opportunity to excel academically through the guidance of their peers, as well as provide students with leadership opportunities and self-advocacy skills. Furthermore, due to the high number of commuter students at UCI, POWER provides a central campus resource center that seeks to foster a sense of community amongst UCI students - another key aspect of retention.
Facts
- 1 in 5 UCI students will drop out within six years.
- Only 57% of students will graduate within four years.
- Schools where the hard sciences are taught have lower retention rates than the social science and humanities/arts disciplines.
- State budget cuts affect the quality and availability of resources at UCI and more and more students are taking longer to graduate or do not graduate at all. These figures keep UCI from rising in national rankings.
- Over 40% of UCI students are paying thousands of dollars to stay fifth and sixth years to go abroad, do a research project or finish a major.
Upperclassmen wish they knew what they know now when they were freshmen. POWER Center mentors will guide students through the decentralized system of campus resources so that UCI students plan and prepare for those resources earlier in their undergraduate careers.

President

 |
Kevin Kaveh - 2nd Year |
Revolutionizing UC Irvine and directly working for the Students.
No empty promises! Change through ACTION!
A candidate for change…..A candidate for hope!
Vote for the most experienced candidate!
Vote Kevin Kaveh, to Lead the Way as the ASUCI President.
Having worked in the office of the President for the past two years, and being the President of two clubs on campus, I can confidently affirm that I am the most qualified candidate for the position of ASUCI President.
Last year, I was awarded the honor of “Intern of the Year” for the Office of the President. This past year I have flawlessly and efficiently directed all operations within the office of the president serving as the Chief of Staff. No other candidate can claim that they’ve had as much involvement with the Office of the President.
My goals include increasing campus life by utilizing the Spirits Commission, under the Office of the President, to its full potential. I plan to orchestrate more campus wide events that students would be proud and enthusiastic to participate in.
I have already sent out a campus-wide music survey to see what students want to see at UCI. I plan to send out at least two more campus wide surveys so I can conclude as to what the students would like to see and what the students would like to see improved for next year. I plan to bring a fresh look to campus life.
Another one of my goals will be to establish an interactive alumni network much like that of prominent institutions. Many students choose to go to certain schools just because of the alumni network that is provided for them. Students know that if they go to a school with a great alumni network, they will have no problem attaining the career they want. As Chief of Staff, I have had the opportunity to sit in on UCI Alumni Association meetings (No other candidate has done this). It has come to my attention that we have very influential and prominent alumni who are eager to help students achieve their professional goals. By acting as a catalyst between the UCI Alumni Association and students, I will help students attain their post-college dreams by presenting new avenues which were not presented to them beforehand.
Furthermore, I plan to establish a substantial “outreach program” so students are constantly heard. I will bring issues of student needs to the administration and keep students up to date on matters that concern them.
My premise for seeking this position is so that I can bring change to the UCI campus; so I can begin by building a better campus environment for all!
=====================
Students' Areas of Concern:
=============
Campus Life
I plan to utilize the new Spirits commission and the Athletics commission, under my office, to its full potential. We have the 2nd largest student spirit group on the west coast (CIA) and students are not aware of this. I plan to work with CIA so we can publicize more for our top ranked athletic teams, so we can bring more students out to games.
=================
Clubs and Organizations:
An essential element of our campus life is the diverse clubs and organizations hosted by UCI. One key concern for clubs and organizations is the issue of funding for events. As a member of the funding board, while utilizing the Student Programming commission, I will work closely with organizations to make sure that they receive the funds they need for their event. By working closely with organizations, I can gain insight into their goals and help them achieve those goals. I alone cannot promise “more funds” for these clubs and organizations because I am a member of a board that votes on funding. However, I can help eliminate more of the bureaucratic red tape that bars students from receiving the funding that they deserve. Furthermore, I will help streamline this process to bring efficiency, so students can receive their funds in a timely manner.
Additionally, I plan to utilize the Club Outreach commission to its full potential by orchestrating innovative events that will encourage students to get involved.
===============
Housing:
Housing has always been a major concern for students. Lack of on campus housing in the Vista del Campo areas as well as other areas is a major issue of concern. It has left many students struggling to find a place to live. One thing I will not do is offer empty promises. I will not stand in front of you and tell you what I think will happen or what I can “try” to do. However, I CAN guarantee that I will work closely with the administration to bring new options to the table for student housing.
Furthermore, I will help speed up the current plans and development for housing by constantly presenting the administration with new ideas to be more efficient and productive, so we can get students housing as soon as possible.
====================
Student Fees
Student fees are going up all the time and since the governor cut 330 million dollars from the UC budget- that means an increase in tuition for next year. This increase will put a lot of pressure and stress on families, especially those who are already struggling to afford tuition. I plan to work closely with the Student Fee Advisory Committee so that we can bring our concerns to the state capitol. I will work directly with the Office of Administrative Affairs, so we can find new ways of minimizing student fees by expanding options for students. I plan on working closely with publishing companies and our own bookstore as to ensure that students can purchase books at affordable and fair prices. Furthermore, I will provide students with multiple avenues of acquiring essential supplies by informing them of their various choices
Finally, I believe that the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships needs to work more efficiently. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships does not efficiently educate students on matters of funding. Many students have come to the Office of President with this concern. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships does not effectively address student questions. There needs to be more education as to how to apply for funds and how to receive funds. Students have a hard time correctly filling out intricate applications for student loans and grants. Additionally, when it comes time for students to receive their funds, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships often presents students with problems and more and more delays. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships is there for student assistance! Students should not feel uneasy walking into the office or asking for assistance over the phone. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships MUST be more helpful and guiding to students. It is their job to make sure that the students get their education by ensuring that each student has the opportunity to receive funds ON TIME. I will work closely with the administration to help bring transformation to this office.
====================
Parking and Transportation
This year, ASUCI brought students the Newport shuttle service which has been a tremendous success. One of my first objectives will be to make sure that this service will continue for the 2008-2009 academic year and beyond. Moreover, parking is a major issue of concern for all students. I plan on working directly with Parking and Transportation so that we can lessen traffic congestion and help present efficient new parking legislation that would allow students to spend MORE TIME ON CAMPUS AND LESS TIME TRYING TO FIND A PARKING SPOT. Furthermore, I would like to address the issue of senseless ticketing on campus. Students live in a fast pace world and parking options to not allow them to get where they need to be on time. Senseless and in my opinion, extortive, ticketing is not fair and students cannot afford it. I want to present new alternatives to minimize ticketing and allow students to get where they need to be.
===============
I have much more on my agenda. I will continue to serve the students needs and bring change to this campus.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me or come by my booth and ask.
Vote Kevin Kaveh, to lead the way, as ASUCI President

Ankur Kheni - 4th Year |
Some of you may know me as 'Mixter Xquizit', but my real name is Ankur Kheni. As a professional DJ in Hollywood, I'm used to working in high-pressure environments while taking & responding to EVERYONE's requests. My main job as a DJ and entertainer has always been to ensure that EVERYBODY is having a great time, and if elected as ASUCI President, I am going to make sure all of UCI has a greatest time they've ever had next year.
I decided to run for President because with yet another budget cut proposed, it's more important than ever to have someone that can and will utilize the budget to it's FULLEST extent. With all my executive administrative experience and social connections, I have exactly what will take to manage this budget, turn our student government around and finally make campus life ENTERTAINING!!!
I promise that, if elected, social life at UCI is going to be FUNDAMENTALLY REVOLUTIONIZED as you currently know it.
If UCI ever wants to see the creation of a large-scale event on campus the size of UCSD's Sun God, it is absolutely necessary to have a President with my type of agenda, experience and connections.
With over 7 years of real-world experience working in the entertainment industry combined with my vast real-world executive administrative experience of over 6 years, including being President and CEO of a company, I am more qualified than any of the other candidates to hire a solidly working team to effectively run and manage the Office of the President to carry out my unique social agenda. I will make sure that business is always conducted diligently yet efficiently, while also catering to the all the needs and wants of the entire student body. I PROMISE TO ENSURE THAT THE ENTIRE ASUCI EXECUTIVE OFFICE IS ON THE SAME SOCIAL AGENDA AS I AM!
Don't trust in the ASUCI experience other candidates may claim, as they don't have much to show for it over the last 4 years. It's time for a President you can trust that has real-world experience with proven results.
VOTE FOR CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN!

Hi everyone, my name is Stephanie Nguyen, or Chef Steph as you may or may not have seen out on ring road. I’m a third year Biomedical Engineering major here at UCI.
What sets me apart from the other candidates is my 3 years of ASUCI experience. I spent the first two years of my college career in the office of Student Services under the publicity, festivals, and concerts commissions. I am currently under the Office of the President, which is another branch of ASUCI, in the spirits commission in which I hold the internal director co-chair position for UCI’s first annual Care-a-thon, a fundraiser for Choc Hospital.
I have plans to change the infrastructure of the office and plan club collaborations in order to not only boost school spirit, but also have a wider range of events, hopefully which could turn into large scale events.
Because I have been in ASUCI for 3 years, I have witnessed the different structures and different VPs and offices conducted, so I know what works and what doesn’t. I have seen the ins and outs of the events Student Services holds and know how they are taken from an idea someone mentions to sound and budget approvals, to collaborations with the different organizations, to finally a successful large-scale event for us students.
Experience counts, and so does your vote!
REMEMBER, CHEF STEPH HAS THE RECIPE FOR YOUR STUDENT SERVICES VP! |

As your representative, it will be my priority- nay, duty- to do what you tell me. I am quite proficient at such interactions, which my parents and past girlfriends can attest to. Thus, I humbly beseech you to vote for me so that I might help improve student life at UCI in every way that I can. Pedigree: SPOP Teal; Kappa Sigma Fraternity; Songfest- Hairspray, Seussical; Eagle Scout; UCI Club Soccer.
<-- Riddle me this: How many other candidates are on the cover of a UCI brochure? |
|
| |
 |
|
**WHY DO I WANT TO BE YOUR AT-LARGE REPRESENTATIVE?**
First and foremost, I love UC Irvine. Because of this, I am avid and ambitious in making a change at our school so that others appreciate the home of the anteater just as much. I have the experience and diversity in my background to bring a fresh outlook, more spirit, and many all-inclusive ideas to UCI’s Legislative Council where I will listen to YOUR requests rather than following my own agenda.
**WHY SHOULD YOU VOTE FOR ME?**
As an At-Large Representative, I need to have a diverse background where I am able to understand and satisfy each school’s and student’s desires to the best of my ability. Also, leadership and compromise are key to any ASUCI position. Here are a few reasons why I am qualified in each of these areas:
At UC Irvine:
• Panhellenic Sorority - Assistant Social Chair
• Relay for Life team captain
• SPOP Staffer 2008
At Corona del Mar High School:
• Yearbook Editor-in-Chief
• Mock Trial Captain
• President and Founder of The Animal Liberation Club
• 4.1 Cumulative GPA
• Winner of several awards including Academic Letters, scholarships, and The Golden Pen award in Journalism
• Supervisor at Gelato Paradiso
With each of these activities, I have worked extensively with very different groups of people. Each of these roles has shown me diversity and taught me how to lead in any situation and with any kinds of people. I recognize that UCI is an extremely diverse campus and I know that I can bring representation to each type of person that our campus has to offer. I am caring, friendly, outgoing, academic, and very ambitious. I know that I can work towards change at UCI with each of you in mind.
**WHAT IDEAS DO I HAVE?**
Additionally, I recognize issues that UCI has with school spirit, parking, academic programs, housing, et cetera, and once elected, plan to address these issues and hear from each of YOU so that I can tackle them for your advantage rather than for my own personal gain.
Look to my past experience and present ambition to make a difference in YOUR future.
Vote for someone experienced in working with diverse populations. Vote for ambition, drive, and motivation. Vote for someone that will represent your desires rather than their own. Vote for passion and strong leadership experience. Vote for representation to be more than just a number. Vote to make a difference at UCI. Vote for change.
Vote for Melyssa Griffin for At-Large representative.

Arts Representative
| |
 |
|
Art students all agree that both passion and excitement are apparent in anything we do. I aim to bring these emotions to the forefront and make a strong impact as the ASUCI Arts Representative reaching out to all students who know the joy of being in the Claire Trevor School of the Arts. Because without the "arts," life would be boring. |
| |
Biological Sciences Representative
| |
 |
|
Experience, Passion, and Integrity, the three values that accompany success in an elected office. I understand how this university works and with my experience on the Academic Senate and as Chair of the Student Fee Advisory Committee I will be able to lead affectively. |
ICS Representative
| |
 |
|

| |

My three years of campus experience ranges from student government with ASUCI Student Services, Greek life with Beta Theta Pi, and a wide array of clubs. This variety has developed my keen understanding of the needs of the student body.
