REQUEST FOR ACTION BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL 
 
All requests may be typed and submitted to the Executive Vice President no later 5:00 p.m. Thursday in order to be included in the agenda for the following Tuesday. The Executive Vice President reserves the right to delay the Request for Action to a later Council session if the Executive Vice President feels the agenda for the next schedule meeting is full.

Synopsis: Additional Voting Stations During ASUCI Fall and Spring Election Weeks

Whereas, it is the duty of the Associated Students of UC Irvine (ASUCI) to ensure the students of the University of California, Irvine have multiple accesses to online voting during voting periods; and,

 

Whereas, a university should be demonstrating the importance of voting in our democracy; and,

 

Whereas, the full participation of young people in the political process is vital to a vibrant and equal democracy; and,

 

Whereas, it is important for students to voice and express their opinions on issues that affect them; and,

 

Whereas, only about 30% of the UC Irvine undergraduate students participated in voting in the ASUCI Spring 2012 elections and less than 10% of the UC Irvine undergraduate students participated in voting in the ASUCI Fall 2013 elections; and,

 

Whereas, ASUCI Spring Elections include the chance of voting on referendums that affects UC Irvine student body as a whole; and,

 

Whereas, ASUCI commits to raising the percentage of undergraduate student voters every year; and,

 

Let it be resolved that ASUCI wants the UC Irvine campus to commit to offering students easy opportunities and accesses to voting during ASUCI elections; and,

 

Let it be finally resolved that ASUCI Elections Commission creates at least three voting booths and/or locations, [at least 1 in Student Center Plaza, at least 1 in Social Sciences Plaza, and at least 1 in Engineering near the Donald Bren Hall] that can allow students to vote easily and quickly during ASUCI Fall and Spring Election weeks.
