Synopsis: Sanctuary Campus for Undocumented Students | |
Date of Presentation: |
|
Resolution in support of Sanctuary campus for undocumented students Whereas, there exists a diverse population of over 600 undocumented/DREAMer/AB540 students enrolled at the University of California Irvine and increasing every year,
Whereas, UCI has welcomed Customs and Border Patrol on campus in the past,
Whereas, undocumented students and other students on campus have been directly impacted by the actions of CBP and ICE and have been greatly affected by the separation (or fear of separation) of their families and violence experienced Whereas, on October 2015 Undocumented Anteaters directly confronted the organizers of an opportunity career fair taking place Thursday October 22nd 2015 and asked if CBP may be removed from the fair because their presence causes emotional and mental distress to students who were previously planning to attend the fair and it obstructed students safety,
Whereas, professionals working in the career center responded negatively and when asked if they valued having one more career opportunity at the fair over the safety of fellow undocumented students/DREAMers/AB540 they responded: Yes because they provide career opportunities as a whole and undocumented students were not majority, and continued to add that UCI undocumented students are “young, mature adults capable of handling our own mental and physical well-being.” disregarding students mental health and actual safety
Whereas, a change.org petition was created as a direct response to this occurrence and frustration of the undocumented students who demanded administration to stand up for them and this petition was spread widely and supported by faculty, staff, and students from UC Irvine campus and outside campus,
Whereas, CBP voluntarily withdrew from coming unto campus and administration did not defend its undocumented population nor made a statement addressing this incident after CBP withdrew
Whereas, undocumented immigrants and DREAMers have been personally targeted and attacked by politicians and presidential candidates in the election cycle of 2016,
Whereas the undocumented community now face uncertainty of what will be the consequences of the new United States President Elect’s immigration decisions and feel unprotected because of their lack of documentation even on campus
Whereas, Janet Napolitano has signed a letter sent to President Donald Trump urging to keep the program Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) that allows DREAMers to be able to have some sort of protection and work authorization in the US affecting students in higher education
Whereas, on November 22, 2016 Vice Chancellor Thomas A. Parham sent an email to UCI students regarding the protection of Undocumented students but excluded all those without DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals)
Whereas, the University of California Irvine values itself in upholding the “unwavering” Principles Against intolerance revised by Chancellor Howard Gillman and other privacy laws
Whereas, ASUCI senate has supported undocumented students in the past by creation of the “DREAMers committee” (R51-06)
Therefore let it be resolved that Associate Students of the University of California Irvine calls upon administration to fully support, serve, and protect undocumented students on campus as part of their declared commitment to ALL students regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, political affiliation and citizenship status.
Let it be resolved that ASUCI calls upon the University of California Irvine, Chancellor Howard Gillman and administration to declare the University of California Irvine a sanctuary campus by condemning and rejecting the presence of Customs and Border Patrol, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement(ICE) on campus, and any other direct connection with organizations that would hinder the safety of undocumented/DREAMers/AB540 students.
Let it be resolved that ASUCI senate supports UCI as a sanctuary campus for undocumented/DREAMers/AB540 students.
Let it be resolved that a copy of this legislation be sent directly to the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor offices. |
