ASUCI denounces the hateful and insensitive events that recently transpired on the UCSD campus. We hope that these are the sentiments of a select few rather than a representation of the attitude of the larger community. We will not tolerate acts of racism, intolerance or disrespect on our campus or within the larger University of California system. Creating a campus community that embraces difference, considers dissenting options and demonstrates respect for everyone is an objective to which every student must actively aspire each day.
As the student government, it is the responsibility of ASUCI to advocate on behalf of issues that are important to the student body. These incidents bring to light a variety of areas in which UC Irvine can work to improve. To this end, we are committed to investigating the possibility of instituting new programs or creating modifications in the following areas:
- Implementing holistic admissions for all UC campuses
- Increasing ethnic diversity at UCI
- Funding for high school outreach
- Promoting retention efforts at UCI
- Evaluating parameters for free speech
- Increasing funding for Ethnic Studies
- Including an Ethnic Studies component in the General Education requirements
- Recruiting diverse faculty and staff
ASUCI recognizes that these objectives are ambitious but we have already convened a series of task forces and are committed to working diligently to advocate for a diverse and respectful campus community throughout the remainder of our terms of office.
