Ever wanted to teach a seminar of your own? Now you can!  Be a UTeach Student Facilitator! Earn 6 units to develop and teach your own class!

Mandatory UTeach Workshops Week 4 & 5.

Wednesday May 7th
2:00 - 3:00pm

These workshops will explain the program, the process, and give you tips on finding a faculty mentor and developing your application.  If you absolutely can not attend one of these workshops, please email the UTeach Commissioner to arrange a meeting. Melody Madarang mmadaran@uci.edu

What is UTeach?


UTeach is an innovative program designed to offer undergraduate students with junior or senior status (by year) and with the guidance of a faculty advisor, the opportunity to design, develop and facilitate, a lower division seminar (15 student limit) for their peers.  Student facilitators will apply and be selected during the spring quarter. 

UTeach Timeline
Spring Quarter 2008

  • Attend the mandatory informational meeting held by the UTeach Commissioner
  • Find a faculty advisor
  • Submit a completed application by the deadline with a resume and faculty advisor’s signature and statement of support

Fall Quarter 2008

  • Enroll in 2 graded units of independent study (either 199 units in your school, or through University Studies)
  • Complete a seminar proposal comprised of the following
  1. Name of the faculty of record
  2. Name of student facilitator
  3. Seminar title and brief description (40 words or less)
  4. Scope and objectives
  5. Grading structure [how the final grade (P/NP) will be determined and the weight of each component]
  6. An outline of the weekly topics, readings, assignments
  7. A brief biography and transcript of the student facilitator
  • Develop a written syllabus
  • Submit proposal to Uteach Commissioner at the Office of Academic Affairs by the deadline (Seminar proposals are reviewed by the UTeach Faculty Student Advisory Committee for final approval)
  • Enroll in the 2-unit training course to be held during Winter Quarter

Winter Quarter 2009

  • Complete training course (2 units P/NP credit)
  • Enroll in the independent-study course for spring quarter (to earn 2 units P/NP credit for teaching the spring seminar)
  • Submit finalized syllabus for second approval to Uteach Commissioner at the Office of Academic Affairs by the deadline (Seminar proposals are reviewed by the UTeach Faculty Student Advisory Committee for final approval)

Spring Quarter 2009

  • Obtain grade roster from faculty advisor
  • Facilitate weekly seminar
  • Meet weekly with faculty advisor
  • Arrange date for faculty advisor to visit the seminar
  • Meet with faculty to determine final grades
  • Write an evaluation of the course, noting problems, successes, and list recommendations to committee and future student facilitators
