[2019-2020 Internal Vice President] Student Support & Advocacy Intern Application

The Student Support and Advocacy Commission (SSAC) is a brand new commission within ASUCI. It has the comprehensive mandate to work across campus to understand ensure that the needs of every Anteater are met. To accomplish this, SSAC will devote itself to promoting student rights, diversity, and inclusivity, while creating programs to help students in financial difficulties, personal crisis, and recovery. This year, the commission will have specific focus on (dis)ability, the LGBTQIA+ community, non-citizen students, veterans, and more! SSAC will also look for new ways to connect students with ASUCI to drive advocacy efforts and increase transparency. Finally, the commission will host light-hearted events on a variety of topics from “Budget-friendly Meal Prep” to “Thriving without a Car” to support students throughout the year! With the help of student-led and student-run campus organizations, SSAC will work to be a caring community of Anteaters to provide support and promote student goals! Interns will have the opportunity to develop their own projects (events or legislation) to address issues of support & advocacy based on their own passions and experiences. The goals for the 2019-2020 academic year are as follows: Connect ASUCI to students and student organizations to create funding, policy initiatives, and awareness to address the diversity of issues affecting each Anteater’s experience. Host workshops and other events to connect students to institutional support structures including, but not limited to, the CARE Office, DSC, LGBTRC, SOAR, the Transfer Hub, the DREAM Center, Veteran Services, the Womxn’s Hub, and the future Latinx Center. Continue and expand past initiative work like Wellness Vending, free sexual health and hygiene products, Disability Services expansion, and the Zot ‘n’ Clothes (clothes pantry). Campaign for the advancement of student rights inside the classroom and other UCI spaces, with specific focus on students with (dis)ability, the LGBT+ community, non-citizen students, and all who wish to partner with us. Research the Student Support & Advocacy services of other universities to advocate the creation of a Student Advocate Center: a new campus department of caseworkers to help students through basic needs insecurity, personal crisis, academic probation, etc. Provide students the tools to participate in their student government through Direct Democracy education and transparency initiatives. Give interns the opportunity to develop their own projects (events or legislation) to address issues of support & advocacy based on their own passions and experiences.
