Synopsis: Students Helping Student-Run Services Referendum
Date of Presentation: 03.04.10

Whereas the students of our University California Irvine have been suffereing under the loss of potential services as a result of budget cut backs as California staggers morosely under economic turmoil,

Whereas, the Associated Students of the University California Irvine, henceforth to be known as ASUCI, have not been spared from this tragedy and have had to make cutbacks and allowances for inflation, deflation, and an expanding student body,

Whereas, ASUCI has quickly fallen behind other such notable UC's in money collected from student fee's, that fund core student run services. Such neglect offers a chance at jeopardizing the well being of our student body,

Whereas, the University experience can not be summed up wholly as just a derivative of class-room functions, but rather it need be seen as a consortium of social, poliitical, and academic engagements that provide for a well rounded character invoking the students of our University with a zeal for success and an incorrigible thirst for virtue,

Whereas, ASUCI is a governing body run by students, who are naturally concerned for the well being of the student body and are the most ardent defenders of student's rights,

Whereas, even a small expansion of the Student Fee would provide a much greater service to the campus at large,

Whereas, students deserve the right to be able to decide whether or not they want to provide the funding to keep these core student run services performing at optimal capicity, or to continue the trend of delineating student involvement and services on our berift campus,

Whereas, the ASUCI Constitution provides an opportunity for students to make this decision themselves under the condition of a Fee Initiative,

Whereas, the tenets of demorcracy demur to a direct election as its truest and most formidable form. It is a duty of any student government to provide as much access and communication as possible within its confines. The promotion of a popular vote places the spirit of democracy within each and every individual student and allows a students fate to become casuistically tied to their decision.

Whereas, any and all such actions that can stir students to be less apathetic on our campus is a duty seen as so basic and primal that it had to necessarily be contained within ASUCI'S Constiutional Preamble in the simple words, "to enhance the quality of student life..."

Whereas, Article VIII Section 3. of the ASUCI Constitution governs such Fee Initiatives and states that with two-thirds (2/3) vote of the Legislative Council members present a Fee Initiative may be placed on the ballot to be considered by the student body at large,

Let it be resolved then that upon receiving the necessary two-thirds (2/3) vote by Legislative Council that the Student Fee Initiatve (below) be placed on the ballot in the Spring Elections of 2010 to be considered by our Student body at large.

Students Helping Student-Run Services Intiative:

Are you in favor of further promoting Student-Run Services by increasing $7.50 per quarter to the aid you already provide to the Associated Students of California Irvine?

The increase in fee would be enacted Fall Quarter, 2010.

The additional money would go to funding expanded services for Students. This includes:

More Money to help promote our rich Club Diversity on Campus through funding grants

Paying for your Shuttles

Bigger and Better Concerts

Overall Expansion of Student Involvement on Campus

In accordance with campus policy, 33% of the Fee will be returned to financial aid to help offset the cost of this fee for students who are eligible for financial aid.

___ Yes, I support a $7.50 per quarter fee for the following:

An increase in aid to promote valuable Student Run Services in ASUCI

___ No, I do not support a per quarter fee increase for Students Helping Student- Run Services Referendum

The results of the referendum will be official only if all the following conditions are met:

A 60% affirmative vote of 25% of the undergraduate student body occurs.
