REQUEST FOR ACTION BY THE ASUCI SENATE 
 
All requests may be typed and submitted to the President of the Senate no later 5:00 p.m. Thursday in order to be included in the agenda for the following Tuesday. The President of the Senate reserves the right to delay the Request for Action to a later Senate session if the President of the Senate feels the agenda for the next schedule meeting is full.

Synopsis: Funds for Underground Scholars Initiative Event

Whereas, Underground Scholars Initiative (USI) UCI chapter aims to create a pathway for formerly incarcerated and system impacted individuals into higher education [1] [2]


Whereas, for USI’s first event will be on May 18th at 12pm in which they are assembling a panel of formerly incarcerated students


Whereas, USI is a new campus organization as of Spring 2018,


Whereas, this event serves as an introduction to Underground Scholars with hopes to recruit more students dedicated to building a prison-to-school pipeline and dismantling the stigmas formerly incarcerated individuals face


Whereas, ASUCI Senate aims to represent the students at UC Irvine


Whereas, formerly incarcerated and system impacted students exist on the campus


Whereas, formerly incarcerated and system impacted people do not currently have a noticeable platform or recognition at UCI  


Whereas, USI needs funds for the following items:

Whereas, USI have asked Criminology, Law and Society Department: Race and Justice Emphasis and Center for Law and Society, and Sociology Department for funds, but have not heard back yet


Therefore, let it be resolved that $430.00 will be taken from the Senate Unallocated Account # 6501-7805 to fund USI’s event.
