All requests may be typed and submitted to the Executive Vice President no later 5:00 p.m. Thursday in order to be included in the agenda for the following Tuesday. The Executive Vice President reserves the right to delay the Request for Action to a later Council session if the Executive Vice President feels the agenda for the next schedule meeting is full.

Synopsis: Condemnation of the Burning of SAS Display

Whereas the destruction of the SAS (Society of Arabic Students) display was the ruin of intellectual and physical property and, Whereas the nature of the mural?s content referred to Arab history, oppression, resistance movements and views and, Whereas the creators of the mural were of Arabic decent and, Whereas the burning of the mural is, blatantly, a direct disruption of free speech on the UC, Irvine Campus and, Whereas the University of California, Irvine is and academic institution and, Whereas there must be a free flow of ideas in all academic settings in order to allow intellectual growth and, Whereas the burning of the SAS display was meant to inhibit the point of view of the creators of the display and against Whereas free speech was designated to be an official action agenda item of the Legislative Council of ASCUI, Therefore, let it be resolved that ASUCI officially condemn the burning of the SAS display as a violation against freedom speech. Let it also be resolved that ASUCI officially condemn the burning of the SAS display as a violation against intellectual growth on the UCI campus Let it ultimately be resolved that ASUCI officially recognize the burning of the SAS display as a hate crime, a civil rights violation, and a violation of free speech that has taken place on the grounds of the University of California, Irvine campus.
