All requests may be typed and submitted to the Executive Vice President no later 5:00 p.m. Thursday in order to be included in the agenda for the following Tuesday. The Executive Vice President reserves the right to delay the Request for Action to a later Council session if the Executive Vice President feels the agenda for the next schedule meeting is full.

Synopsis: ASUCI support of appointment of Dolores Huerta as UC Regent

Whereas, Dolores Huerta was appointed to the University of California Board of Regents in September 2003 by Governor Gray Davis to replace Regent Norman Pattiz and to serve the remaining six months of his term; and

Whereas, Dolores Huerta?s term expired on March 1, 2004; and

Whereas, Dolores Huerta fulfilled all of her duties as a Regent successfully by visiting University of California campuses and maintaining an exemplary attendance record; and

Whereas, the Regents are responsible for fulfilling the promise of the University of California Master Plan to provide access to education for all students. Furthermore, Dolores Huerta has had the experience necessary to represent immigrants, first generation university students, and low-income students? needs. Dolores Huerta has dedicated her life to the fight for equal representation and rights for all Californians. Thus, she brings a unique and important voice to issues affecting the quality, affordability, and accessibility of the University of California; and

Whereas, Dolores Huerta began her career as a schoolteacher, was educated at Stockton College (now known as Delta College) and has received honorary doctorate degrees from New College of San Francisco, San Francisco State University and S.U.N.I. New Palz University; and

Whereas, Dolores Huerta is the co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America, is an active lobbyist against toxic pesticides that threaten farm workers, consumers, and the environment; and

Whereas, Dolores Huerta has been awarded the Outstanding Labor Leader Award, the ACLU Roger Baldwin Medal of Liberty Award, the Eugene V. Debs Foundation Outstanding American Award, the Consumer?s Union Trumpeter?s Award and the Ellis Island Medal of Freedom Award. She was also inducted into the National Women?s Hall of Fame, was one of three Ms. Magazine?s ?Women of the Year? and one of the Ladies Home Journal?s ?100 Most Important Women of the 20th Century?;

Therefore, Let it be resolved the ASUCI recognizes Dolores Huerta for her experience and dedication to the struggle for equality and opportunity for all and thus finds her to be an exceptional candidate for appointment to the University of California Board of Regents;

Therefore, Let it further be resolved that ASUCI calls upon Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to appoint Dolores Huerta for a full twelve year term to the University of California Board of Regents;

Let it finally be resolved that copies of this resolution be sent to Dolores Huerta, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante, the University of California Board of Regents, the United Farm Workers of America, the Dolores Huerta Association, the Service Employees International Union, the National Council of La Raza, the Center for Labor Research and Education, the University of California Student Association, Chancellor Ralph Cicerone, Vice Chancellor Manuel Gomez, the New University and KUCI.
