Item Number: 31 Legislation Number (B: Bill, R: Resolution): R40-26
Author:   Enriquez   Second:  Boothby
Synopsis: Resolution in Support of Prioritizing Funding for Student Initiated Outreach
Date of Presentation: 11/16/2004

Whereas, ASUCI has supported Student Initiated Outreach projects (SIO) in the past; and

Whereas, the amount of support that has been legislatively mandated to support SIO projects throughout the UC system has dramatically decreased over the past 4 years; and

Whereas, the number of UCI student based campus organizations that administer SIO projects has decreased due to financial constraints; and

Whereas, SIO projects target at-risk youth and ensure that students not only graduate but go on to higher education; and

Whereas, SIO projects use the holistic empowerment model and not only help students academically but also empower them personally and involve them in the community; and

Whereas, SIO projects have proven to be effective and heavily support by both students, staff, faculty and community members; and

Whereas, Student Initiated Outreach Programs have expanded to various campuses across the UC system including UCLA, Berkeley and Santa Cruz; and

Whereas, SIO projects benefit UCI students by promoting leadership skills, programming skills, and awareness with regards to educational issues; and

Whereas, the UC Office of the President and the UC Regents have financially prioritized academic preparation programs over high yield recruitment programs; and

Whereas, Student Initiated Outreach has seen a continuous cut to their funding by the State Legislature and the University of California and continue to receive the least amount of funding of all Academic Preparatory programs in the state.

Let it be resolved that, the Legislative Council and ASUCI demand that the UC Office of the President and UC Regents prioritize and increase the funding that Student Initiated Outreach programs receive on a long term basis.
