| Synopsis: ASUCI support of AFSCME | |
| Date of Presentation: |
|
| Whereas as members of the University student government our goal is to make Our University a fair and transparent institution for all; Whereas the workers on campus facilitate the services we take for granted such as custodial work, food service work, and other work sectors; and Whereas the service workers? the Custodians, Maintenance and Food Service Workers, Security Officers, etc. ? who make it possible for us to learn, work, and live on this campus are at the forefront of a larger struggle for justice and accountability in Our University; Whereas as students who benefit and are enriched by the services that the University workers provide, we should be compelled to advocate for their worker?s rights; and Whereas some 9,000 University service workers, are struggling as a union, AFSCME, for a contract that includes respect for the contribution of all workers on this campus, living wages that help lift workers and their families out of poverty, and a ?chance to advance? career opportunities program; Whereas it is imperative that the student government uphold the student body?s concern for the University workers and demand accountability from the administration; Therefore, Let it be resolved that ASUCI recognize the current labor struggle for worker?s right that AFSCME is involved in. Their struggle is one of justice and equal treatment in the University that should be afforded to every employee, but is currently withheld to many; and Therefore, Let it further be resolved that ASUCI put forth efforts to support AFSCME by attending their Labor Rally on Dec. 2, 2004 at 11:30am at the Free Speech Area. The attendance of ASUCI at the rally will show ASUCI?s never-ending support and advocacy for Free Speech at UCI; and Let it finally be resolved that ASUCI will continue to show support for AFSCME throughout the 2004-2005 academic year in an effort to improve the quality of life of the University workers. Support may come in the form of attendance at AFSCME informational meetings as well as involvement in their efforts as a whole. In addition, as members of ASUCI we strongly encourage all students and members of ASUCI not to cross picket lines to work or study in the event of a strike. |
