Item Number: 102 Legislation Number (B: Bill, R: Resolution): R40-68
Author:   Boothby   Second:  Maddox
Synopsis: ASUCI Support of Denim Day, 2005
Date of Presentation: 4/19/2005

Whereas, the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CALCASA) has declared April 27, 2005 as "Denim Day California"; and

Whereas, Denim Day is designed to draw attention to the fact that rape and sexual assault remain serious issues in our society and work toward the prevention of such; and

Whereas, Harmful attitudes about rape and sexual assault allow these crimes to persist and allow survivors to be re-victimized through victim-blaming attitudes and unresponsive government systems; and

Whereas, "Denim Day California" is intended to call attention to misconceptions and misinformation about rape and sexual assault, as well as the problem that many in our society remain disturbingly uninformed about assault and forcible rape; and

Whereas, The importance of this issue is underlined by statistics indicating that approximately one-in-four women and one-in-ten men are raped during their lifetime and women between the ages of 18-25 are at an increased risk; and

Whereas, With proper education on the matter, there is compelling evidence that we can be successful in reducing incidents of this alarming and psychologically damaging crime; and

WHEREAS, The State Legislature strongly supports the efforts of CALCASA to educate persons in our community about the true impact of rape and sexual assault in California.

Therefore, let it be resolved that ASUCI Legislative Council, on behalf of its school?s constituents, as well as the whole of ASUCI, firmly support April 27, 2005 as the official Denim Day.

Let it further be resolved that ASUCI Legislative Council, and the whole of ASUCI do its part in supporting this event by proudly displaying buttons, which will be donated by the Campus Assault Resource Program (CARP).

Let it finally be resolved that a copy of this legislation be sent to the Dean of Students, Campus Assault Resource Program (CARP), The Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, the Chancellor, and the President of the University of California.
