Synopsis: STAR (Student Aid Reward) Act Resolution
Date of Presentation: 4/26/2005

Whereas, it is ASUCI's responsibility to advocate and support the student interest, and

Whereas, the STAR Act was reintroduced on March 15th, 2005, and

Whereas, the STAR Act would eliminate the wasteful government subsidies currently being given to private lending companies, and

Whereas, this elimination of government subsidies to private lending companies would, according to a preliminary cost estimate by the CBO, provide $17.2 billion in the next decade for schools participating in the Federal Direct Loans program to use for additional student aid via Pell Grants; thus, improving affordability and student access to higher education, and

Whereas, UCI currently only uses Federal Direct Loans program, and

Whereas, this policy should be implemented statewide and nationally for the benefit of all students, therefore,

Let it be resolved that ASUCI support and formally endorse this bill.

Let it further be resolved that ASUCI politely request that our administration, specifically Chancellor Cicerone, Executive Vice Chancellor Gottfredson and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Manuel Gomez formally endorse this bill by signing a letter that will be presented to them in the next student government lunch-in on May 2nd, 2005.
