Item Number: 108 Legislation Number (B: Bill, R: Resolution): R40-71
Author:   Zamora   Second:  Maddox
Synopsis: Preserving the Accountability of ASUCI
Date of Presentation: 5/3/2005

Whereas ASUCI Legislative Council and Executive Board were elected to represent the need of the student population, and

Whereas ASUCI should remain accountable to the students and sponsor events that preserve respect towards the student population, and

Whereas ASUCI Office of Student Services is sponsoring a “Cinco de Mayo” Celebration on May 5, 2005 in which there will be a pepper eating contest, virgin margaritas and free salsa lessons, and

Whereas this event conflicts with another “Cinco de Mayo” event being sponsored by ASUCI and MEChA, in which MEChA will address the stereotypes of a COMMERCIALIZED CULTURAL CELEBRATION and the lack of history present in these events , and

Whereas, the event sponsored by our Vice-President of Student Services did not originally have a purpose, and became “Cinco de Mayo” despite MEChA’s several attempts to reserve the same space or co-sponsor the event, and

Whereas, sponsoring two events for the same celebration is a waste of student fees and resources, and

Whereas, a pepper eating contest, virgin margaritas and free salsa lessons, perpetuate stereotypes and ameliorates the real meaning of the “Cinco de Mayo” celebration, and

Whereas, this event is offensive to students, faculty, administration and the Chicano/Latino Community,

Let it be resolved that ASUCI legislative council does not support the “Cinco de Mayo” celebration sponsored by the Office of Student Services

Let it further be resolved that ASUCI Legislative Council request the Vice-President of Student Services to cancel the “Cinco de Mayo” to be held on May 5, 2005 from 11:00am-1:00pm, at the flagpoles.
