Item Number: 112 Legislation Number (B: Bill, R: Resolution): R40-75
Author:   Zamora   Second:  Enriquez
Synopsis: Category VII Breadth
Date of Presentation: 5/17/2005

Whereas, one of the goals of the ASUCI Legislative Council Representatives is to represent the academic needs of our constituents, and

Whereas, the state of California and consequently its institutions are increasingly becoming more diverse, and

Whereas, we live in an increasingly interdependent world in which many pressing issues transcend national borders, and

Whereas, as responsible citizens of a multicultural state we should be informed about multicultural and international issues that ultimately affect us, and

Whereas, the UCI Category VII Breath requirement allows students the opportunity to fulfill this responsibility by learning about issues related to diversity, and

Whereas, the Task Force on Undergraduate Education has submitted a report which would potentially eliminate the Category VII, Multicultural/International Breadth Requirement, and

Whereas, via a survey conducted by one of the Social Sciences Representatives during winter quarter most of the students expressed their discontent with the removal of this requirement, and

Whereas, the elimination of such requirement would further perpetuate ignorance and stereotypes among the different groups that compose our diverse state,

Let it be resolved that ASUCI Legislative Council does not support the removal of the Category VII Breadth, and

Let it finally be resolved that a copy of this legislation be sent to the Council on Educational Policy, the Executive Vice Chancellor, the Associate Executive Vice Chancellor, the Dean of Undergraduate Education, and the Chair of the Academic Senate.
