Item Number: 73 Legislation Number (B: Bill, R: Resolution): R43-59
Author:   Jose Carlos Faz   Second:  Russel Curry
Synopsis: ASUCI Request For Ban On Styrofoam and Plastics Use
Date of Presentation: 4/29/2008

Whereas Styrofoam, specifically polystyrene, and plastic products require contaminating, nonreusable chemicals for their manufacturing process,

Whereas Styrofoam itself is a pollutant since it is not biodegradable,

Whereas Styrofoam and Plastics quickly takes up space in landfills and the environment,

Whereas UCI is a research institution that is focused on lowering its impact on the environment through several green initiatives,

Whereas the addition of several dining establishments in the new UCI Student Center, retail dining locations, and UCI Catering have increased the use of Styrofoam on campus,

Whereas the use of Styrofoam products contribute to UCI's yearly impact on the environment and increase its carbon footprint,

Whereas there are alternative products that work just as well as Styrofoam and pollute the environment significantly less,

Let it be resolved that the UCI student body does not support the use of Styrofoam products and encourages that the university to seek alternative products to Styrofoam.
