| Synopsis: RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE 2008-2009 AFSCME CONTRACT CAMPAIGN | |

| WHEREAS The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 3299 is the union representing over 20,000 service and patient care workers across the University of California system; WHEREAS AFSCME 3299 represents, not only the service workers on the UCI campus, but also patient care workers and service workers at the UCI Medical Center, Clinics and Administrative Offices; WHEREAS a substantial number of service and patient care workers at UCI are currently being paid between $9.00 and $11.00 an hour; WHEREAS A large majority of the service workers at UCI work more than one job, aside from their employment at UCI, to earn an income barely above the national poverty line; WHEREAS Service and patient care workers across the University of California system are paid 25-30% below the California market rate; Whereas, the University of California Irvine Student Body support intellectual growth, economic growth, and sustainability of the UCI student body and employees, Whereas, the UCI student body are in support of an increase in needed materials, physical and/or non physical, for the intellectual growth, economic growth, and sustainability of the UCI student body and employees, Whereas, the UCI student body concern still stands that UC fees for housing, dining, parking, and tuition are increasing substantially, Whereas, in light of the increasing fees UCI students support AFSCME, but herby declare that this support from the UCI student body will not be held accountable in any monetary manner. Whereas, let it be understood that the UC system, with the inclusion of the profitable medical centers, can and should support the deficit incurred by the workers. RESOLVED That the service and patient care workers at UCI are responsible for, but not limited to, maintaining the prestige of UCI by maintaining the campus grounds, facilities, building and lecture hall custodial services, food services, on-campus residency custodial services, providing frontline patient care; RESOLVED That the services and work provided by service workers at UCI are an integral and crucial component of student satisfaction, student life, the overall student experience, and the campus community as a whole; RESOLVED That UCI must consider, account for, and support all of its community members equally; Let it also be RESOLVED that the student body does not support an increase in co-pay for the worker’s health care plan. Nor does it support a decrease in the benefits provided by the healthcare package. Let it also be RESOLVED that the students do not support an increase of fiscal contribution to an equal or lesser pension plan as compared to the one that currently exists or was in place no more than three years ago. Let it also be RESOLVED that the students support a step system based on seniority and longevity, not on arbitrary management decisions. Let it be finally RESOLVED that UCI supports AFSCME’s efforts of the 2007-2008 AFSCME Contract Campaign and its fight for justice, with the understanding that the support will not hold the UCI student body accountable for monetary increases in UCI housing, dining, parking, or tuition.
