REQUEST FOR ACTION BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL 
 
All requests may be typed and submitted to the Executive Vice President no later 5:00 p.m. Thursday in order to be included in the agenda for the following Tuesday. The Executive Vice President reserves the right to delay the Request for Action to a later Council session if the Executive Vice President feels the agenda for the next schedule meeting is full.

Synopsis: The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) Student Fee Referendum

Whereas, the students of the University of California Irvine shall have the ability to create and enact self-imposed fees, and

Whereas, there is a demand for the opportunity to vote on a fund that will serve to make the University of California Irvine more sustainable through undergraduate efforts, and

Whereas, the student fee referenda are to be voted on during the Spring quarter elections, and

Whereas, it is the responsibility of the Legislative Council to ensure that referenda will successfully function, upon the approval by the students, before the referendum is to be voted on, and

Therefore, let it be resolved that The Green Initiative Fund referendum be placed on the ballot for the Spring 2009 elections with the approval of Legislative Council.

 

The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) 2009 Ballot Language

Are you in favor of a $3.50 per quarter fee to create a funding grant for projects to aid the campus in becoming more sustainable?

                The fee would be enacted Fall Quarter, 2009.

An elected position, the Sustainability Commissioner, will be created.

In accordance with campus policy, 33% of the Fee will be returned to financial aid to help offset the cost of this fee for students who are eligible for financial aid. 

After the return to financial aid, the rest of the fee will be distributed as a funding grant for sustainability projects

Any funding requests must have an undergraduate student submit the proposal and involved in the project

___ Yes, I support a $3.50 per quarter fee for the following:

                $10.50 for a funding grant for UCI sustainability projects per year

___ No, I do not support a per quarter fee for The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) Referendum

The results of the referendum will be official only if all the following conditions are met:

A 60% affirmative vote of 25% of the undergraduate student body occurs.
