Item Number: 93 Legislation Number (B: Bill, R: Resolution): R44-76
Author:   Jesse Cheng   Second:  Mike Hidalgo
Synopsis: ASUCI Support of Tagalog Language Study in the School of Humanities
Date of Presentation: 5/5/09

Whereas it is stated in the Constitution of the Associated Students, University of California Irvine that ASUCI is charged with mission to “encourage and maintain the freedom to pursue knowledge” and “encourage student academic rights and responsibilities”, and

Whereas there has been a significant undergraduate student desire on this campus for a number of years for a Tagalog language studies program to be provided by the School of Humanities, and

Whereas according to the United States Census and the Statistical Abstract of the United States in 2003, Tagalog is the fifth most spoken language in the nation, and

Whereas previous Tagalog programs provided by UC Irvine have not fulfilled language requirements set out by the School of Humanities, have not provided adequate numbers of classes and time options for students, and have been taught only by long-distance learning techniques, and

Whereas previous Tagalog programs have been deemed inadequate in creating a positive learning community for undergraduate students, and

Whereas the School of Humanities has ceased since the Fall of 2008 to provide further Tagalog language instruction, and

Whereas the School of Humanities in the past has failed to provide a fulfilling, consistent, and enriching Tagalog language program, and

Whereas it should be the responsibility and obligation of a public institution of higher education to provide enriching and well-rounded curriculum to its undergraduate students that creates both inter-cultural and global communication and an engaging academic environment, and

Whereas conversations with Associate Dean Rodrigo Lazo of the School of Humanities have suggested that placing Tagalog in the School of Humanities is a possible viable proposal, and

Whereas conversations with Professor Glenn Levine, the inaugural director of the new Humanities Language Learning Program within the School of Humanities, also states that it is the purpose of the program to facilitate language learning opportunities for incoming students,

Therefore, let it be resolved that the Associated Students at the University of California, Irvine request that a Tagalog language program be provided by the School of Humanities that will be offered at reasonable class times, will be taught in a physical space by a present educator on the campus of UC Irvine, and will fulfill the language requirements of the School of Humanities.

Let it further be resolved that the Associated Students at the University of California, Irvine officially supports registered Dean of Students student organizations that advocate and lobby for such a Tagalog language program to be provided by the University.

Let it finally be resolved that the Associated Students at the University of California, Irvine officially recognize the importance of inter-cultural and global communication, and will support the promotion of such discourse and dialogue across campus.
