Item Number: 143 Legislation Number (B: Bill, R: Resolution): R45-111
Author:   Carlos Juarez   Second:  Justine Calma
Synopsis: Support of Solidarity with the LGBT Community of UC Riverside and CSU Long Beach and the LGBT Resource Center of UC Davis
Date of Presentation: 06.01.10

Whereas, on February 10, 2010, at approximately 5:00 p.m., two self-identified gay male UC Riverside students were stalked, and eventually physically assaulted while enduring anti-gay epithets from three assailants while walking next to the John W. North High School in Riverside, California; and

Whereas, both students were hospitalized and treated for various injuries suffered during the beating; and

Whereas, on February 26, 2010, the UC Davis Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transsexual (LGBT) Resource Center was defaced and vandalized with derogatory and hateful words targeted at the LGBT Community; and

Whereas, on April 15, 2010, at approximately 9:30 p.m., a transgendered CSU Long Beach student was confronted by an assailant, pushed into a bathroom stall and slashed repeatedly on the chest with a sharp object; and

Whereas, the student was hospitalized and treated for the injuries suffered during the attack,

Whereas, the largely-invisible LGBT community, contributes to the diversity of the University of California System as a whole,

Whereas, the need for safe and confidential hate crime reporting and the collection of critical personal stories is made possible by the UC Irvine LGBT Resource Center in the form of anonymous online hate crime reporting; and

Whereas, safety manifests itself in many different forms, which for LGBT students at UC Irvine it unfortunately can, and sometimes must mean safety from other students, which necessitates greater vigilance by the UCIPD to be sensitive to the needs of the LGBT community at UC Irvine; and

Whereas, the support of the Legislative Council of the Associated Students of UC Irvine (ASUCI) is necessary as a representation of a diverse body of students who stand in opposition to the hateful acts of the early months of 2010 that continue to terrorize the students, faculty, and staff across the UC System,

Therefore, Let it be resolved, that ASUCI supports and stands firmly in solidarity with the LGBT community of CSU Long Beach, UC Riverside and the LGBT Resource Center of UC Davis in condemnation of the dangerous compromises to the safety of LGBT individuals Statewide,

Let it further be resolved, that ASUCI recognizes that the UC System is facing a crisis in the recent barrage of hate crimes and hateful incidents, directed toward not only students of color, but also the LGBT community of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff,

Let it finally be resolved, that ASUCI urges the respective Police Departments of the affected Universities, to continue investigations on these two separate incidents as hate crimes against the LGBT communities of CSU Long Beach, UC Davis and UC Riverside.
