Students that have been given the opportunity to study under the University of California system have a proud and noble heritage of being exemplary within the greater California Community and by extension… the rest of the world. They are well known for their imagination, innovation, and success as leaders amongst there peers.

Whereas, the students at the University California Irvine, in particular, understand the gravity of this responsibility and do not take it lightly; they must be seen as ready for any challenge: willing and able to make change in order to craft the world into a better place.

Whereas, embracing this obligation, the Associated Students of this University have shown a keen interest in promoting wellness and sustainable actions as a way to give our communities an opportunity to thrive for ages to come.

Whereas, in response to these noble ideals a bold manifestation came to fruition in the spring of 2009, when your legislative predecessors saw fit to pass an accord that made strong recommendations to the administration to see that a campus wide smoking ban be put into full affect.

Whereas, this brought much needed attention to the cause, but failed to bring about full implementation.

Whereas, great faith has been placed within our duly elected governing bodies to safeguard the ideals and dreams of students everywhere, and

Whereas, our Constitution and By-laws have set forth specific and necessary duties to be performed to complement these regards, and it is such that within every Legislative Council member lies a responsibility to speak with his/her Dean and/or Associate every quarter, they are thus provided with a unique opportunity to invite there school’s administration into a broad “wellness” coalition.

Let it then be resolved, that this Council reasserts that it shall actively work towards promoting these ends; including but not limited to, speaking with their individual school administrations and constituencies.

Furthermore, let it be noted that the Associated Students of the University California Irvine are proud to set a staunch example of wellness for their community by promoting a campus wide smoking ban and invite the Chancellor to do the same.
