Item Number: 101 Legislation Number (B: Bill, R: Resolution): R45-83
Author:   Eric Ly   Second:  Sarah Bana
Synopsis: Legislative Council Support for the United States Census
Date of Presentation: 03.30.10

Whereas, the Census was sent out recently to households across America,

Whereas, the Census will be distributed to on-campus residents next month,

Whereas, federal funding is tied to the number of people counted in our state and local communities through the Census,

Whereas, these funds support our schools, hospitals, public safety and transportation projects,

Whereas, given the global recession and California’s unprecedented budget crisis, we can not afford to lose this critical funding,

Whereas, data generated by the Census will determine where over $400 billion in federal funding is allocated over the next ten years,

Whereas, Census data affects grants and loan program funding and distribution,

Whereas, the census helps employers understand where the next generation of workers is coming from, which will influence recruitment efforts,

Whereas, the Census figures help establish fair-market rents and enforce fair lending practices,

Whereas, California could lose Congressional representation for the next decade if we do not have an accurate Census count,

Whereas, the Census only takes 10 minutes,

Whereas, proper representation of the students of the University of California Irvine is needed to ensure future services to properly serve future students of UC Irvine,

Let it be resolved that ASUCI Legislative Council encourage students on campus to fill out the Census through a message on it’s Facebook group.

Let it further be resolved that Legislative Council members table one day on Ring Road when the Census information booth will also be on Ring Road and encourage students to fill out the Census.
