Whereas the Army Reserve Officers Program Corps (ROTC) cadets at UC Irvine do not have their own accredited program on campus, but rather are part of the Trojan Battalion (with California State University, Long Beach California State University, Dominquez Hills, and the University of Southern California) Whereas the UC Irvine ROTC cadets have no facilities, receive no course credit for their work, and are not officially recognized by the campus, Whereas this presents a significant hardship for the students for the following reasons: In addition to maintaining full-time student status, UCI cadets are required to take Military Science lectures and labs and a Military History course as a part of the ROTC academic curriculum. Although they are cross-enroll at CSULB, it does not appear on their UCI transcripts and is not integrated into their grade point averages. No ROTC facilities exist on the UCI campus so ROTC cadets must travel to CSULB or USC for mandatory activities and this often equates to over 8 hours of travel time per month and 300 miles of driving. ROTC at UC Irvine has the staff, instructors, and office equipment to provide military instruction and support, but no place to house them. Whereas the ROTC cadets at UC Irvine have spent a year developing a proposal for the Academic Senate to incorporate the Army ROTC (Military Science) Program into the School of Social Ecology, thereby affording official recognition to the program and allowing students to receive academic credit for their military science courses and be eligible for facilities on campus Whereas this proposal has already secured the support of Manuel Gomez, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, and numerous faculty Whereas the proposal is currently being evaluated by the Academic Senate’s Council on Educational Policy and the School of Social Ecology, Whereas it is the duty of the Associated Students to “provide a forum for the expression of student views and interests “ (ASUCI Constitution, Preamble) and champion programs that facilitate this objective, Let it therefore be resolved that ASUCI recognizes the valuable contributions that ROTC cadets make to this campus and appreciates the merit of having a fully accredited ROTC program on campus, Let it finally be resolved that ASUC encourage the Academic Senate to approve the proposal to incorporate the Army ROTC (Military Science) Program into the School of Social Ecology. |
