Author:   Justine Calma   Second:  Eric Ly
Synopsis: Resolution condemning passage of SB1070
Date of Presentation: 05.04.10

Whereas Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed SB1070 into law on April 23, 2010, and

Whereas this law gives police the authority to stop and inspect anyone they suspect is
undocumented, and

Whereas this law requires that individuals, regardless of immigration status or citizenship, must carry proof of legal status in order to protect themselves from arrest, and

Whereas, those who do not produce proof of legal residency will be arrested,
detained, and possibly deported, and

Whereas, arrestees will be charged with trespassing a misdemeanor, and in
some cases, a felony, and

Whereas public agencies and service providers would have to demand
identification documents from any person and report them to law
enforcement or face legal consequences themselves, and

Whereas it the U.S. Constitution gives the federal government the sole responsibility to set and enforce immigration policy, and

Whereas SB1070 has been criticized for inducing state-sanctioned harassment and racial profiling because it is difficult to set standards on what is suspect behavior, and

Whereas the University of California, Irvine holds as one of its values empathy: to act with compassion and sensitivity, and

Whereas to speak against an infringement on human dignity is to uphold the value of empathy,

Let it therefore be resolved that the Associated Students of the University of California, Irvine oppose the passing of SB1070 into law.
