Item Number: 119 Legislation Number (B: Bill, R: Resolution): R45-97
Author:   Justine Calma   Second:  Eric Ly
Synopsis: Resolution to uphold categories 7 and 8 breadth requirements
Date of Presentation: 05.04.10

Whereas the campus-wide Academic Senate Council on Educational Policy is proposing that the Multicultural Studies and International/Global Issues General Education requirements (Categories 7 and 8) be satisfied only by classes which also meet GE Requirement Category 2 (Science and Technology), 3 (Social and Behavioral Studies) or 4 (Arts and Humanities), and

Whereas, there are currently 17 classes which now meet the Multicultural or International Issues requirements but do not also satisfy requirement 2, 3 and 4, and

Whereas, these 17 classes include courses in Sociology, Political Science, and Ethnic Studies among others

Whereas, removing them from a list of classes which satisfy a General Education requirement will severely reduce enrollment in these classes, and

Whereas, this measure threatens to remove the multicultural component of education at UCI, and

Whereas, ongoing instances of intolerance within the UC system, such as the Compton Cookout and hanging of a noose at UCSD demonstrate the need for multicultural education, and

Whereas, this proposal is on the CEP agenda for Thursday, May 6th 2010, and

Whereas, as of 11:40 p.m. on Monday, May 3rd, 2010 an online petition to uphold the multicultural studies requirement at UCI had 352 signatures*,

Let it therefore be resolved that ASUCI take a stance to uphold the Categories 7 and 8 General Education requirements.
