Whereas on February 13th 2011, the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) held a fundraising event at the Yorba Linda Community Center to help fight homelessness and hunger in the United States, and to aid a Women’s domestic abuse shelter,

Whereas members of the “We Surround Them OC 912” (Local Tea Party Group), North Orange County Conservative Coalition, and ACT! For America held a protest outside the Yorba Linda Community Center in conjunction with the fundraiser,

Whereas elected officials including Congress members Ed Royce and Gary Miller, and Villa Park Councilwoman Deborah Pauly spoke at the protest,

Whereas over three hundred protesters, including elected officials vocalized their opposition to the fundraising dinner by spewing vitriolic and hateful statements towards the Muslim community members who attended the event,

Whereas protesters shouted invective statements such as, "Go home terrorist," "Muhammad is a pervert, Muhammad is a child molester," "Go home and beat your wife, she needs a good beating,"[1] at the event-goers.

Whereas Councilwoman Deborah Pauly of Villa Park[2] , CA, called the event goers “terrorists” and incited violence by stating that she “knew quite a few Marines who would be very happy to help these terrorists to an early meeting in paradise,”

Whereas evidence in the video “Hate Comes to OC”[3] reveals the Islamophobic environment, organizing, threats, and language in which “the rhetoric of the protesters became increasingly venomous toward the families and children who attended the ICNA fundraising dinner.

Whereas it is our responsibility as students and citizens to stand against such blatant exhibitions of hate and bigotry,

Whereas we hold our elected officials to a higher moral standard that values and promotes diversity, respect, and responsible dialogue,

Whereas students and citizens of Orange County we stand in urging “all elected officials in attendance to distance themselves from such an exhibition of hate and bigotry. We further ask residents and elected officials of Yorba Linda, Orange County and other parts of our nation to speak out against such hateful rhetoric and the continued Islamophobia that plagues our nation,"

Whereas, the mission of ASUCI is to create a safe environment for all students by recognizing the Islamophobic environment in Orange County and by taking an active stance against all racist actions,

And whereas UCI strives to promote the nation's foundational values of inclusiveness, pluralism and equality,

LET IT BE RESOLVED, that ASUCI condemns the behavior of elected Congressmen Ed Royce and Gary Miller, and Councilwoman Deborah Pauly for supporting the protest that sought to intimidate and threaten the Muslim Community of Orange County,

LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED, that ASUCI strongly urges all students to support the Muslim community during this struggle against Islamophobia and seek to create a safe environment for all people in the Orange County and the United States.
