| Whereas a 9.0-magnitude megathrust earthquake off the coast of Japan occurred at 02:46 P.M. Pacific Time on March 11th, 2011, Whereas the earthquake moved Honshu 7.9 feet east and shifted the Earth on its axis by about 3.9 inches, Whereas the TÅhoku earthquake is one of the five most powerful earthquakes in the world since modern geological record-keeping began in 1900, Whereas the earthquake immediately triggered a tsunami wave of up to 33 feet that traveled up to 6 miles inland in some locations, with smaller waves reaching many other countries after several hours, including one that arrived at Newport Beach at 09:45 A.M. Pacific Time on March 12th, 2011, Whereas Tsunami warnings were issued and evacuations ordered along Japan's Pacific coast and at least 20 other countries, including the entire Pacific coast of North America and South America, Whereas the Japanese National Police Agency has officially confirmed 7,700 deceased, 2,612 injured, and 11,651 people missing, as well as over 100,000 buildings damaged or destroyed, Whereas, as of March 14th, 2011, roughly 4.4 million households in northeastern Japan were left without electricity and 1.5 million without water. Whereas, as of March 18th, 2011, at least three nuclear reactors had suffered explosions due to excessive hydrogen gas accumulation and cooling system failure and residents within a 12-mile radius of the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant and a 6-mile radius of the Fukushima II Nuclear Power Plant were evacuated, Now, therefore, let it be resolved that the ASUCI Legislative Council sends our most sincere condolences to the people who are impacted by this disaster and urges the UCI community to participate in relief support for the people who are impacted by this disaster. |
