Whereas on September 27th 2011, the UC Berkeley’s College Republicans held a demoralizing “Bake Sale”, targeting underrepresented students, and creating a hostile environment on the UC Berkeley campus,
Whereas the “Bake Sale” was an event in opposition to a call-in action to pass Senate Bill 185 hosted by The University of California Berkeley Student Government,
Whereas passing SB 185 would have authorized “the University of California and the California State University to consider race, gender, ethnicity, and national origin, along with other relevant factors, in undergraduate and graduate admissions, to the maximum extent permitted by the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution, Section 31 of Article I of the California Constitution, and relevant case law,”
Whereas the College Republicans interpretation of SB 185 was uninformed, and reinforces the misconception of reverse discrimination,
Whereas SB 185 does not inhibit anyone’s ability to be admitted to a University, but rather recognizes the situational and unequal circumstances that make it difficult for people of color and other underrepresented communities to pursue higher education.
Whereas the event hosted by the College Republicans was a racist, and sexist event and completely ignored a student’s class struggle and history,
Whereas the Associated Student Government of the University of California Irvine is a member of the University of California Student Association (UCSA),
Whereas UCSA’s main undergraduate campaign is HOPE “Holistic Opportunity and Promoting Equality” which focuses to pass SB 185 and get a UC system supplementary financial aid form,
Whereas SB 185 was a bill which nature was supported by California’s governor Jerry Brown but failed to pass on October 9th, 2011, due to California’s Proposition 209,
Whereas since the passing of California’s Proposition 209, numbers of students of color have decreased in the UC school system,
Whereas the University of California, Irvine currently fails to have a diverse student body,
Whereas as the 2010-2011 academic year we had 0.48% of Native American students, 2% of Black American Students, 6% of Middle Eastern Students, 15% of Latino/Chicano students, 0.19% Pacific Islander, etc..
Whereas the current seven core values of the University of California Irvine are respect, intellectual curiosity, integrity, commitment, empathy, appreciation and fun,
Where as according to the Chancellor those values are meant to “foster the creative process, build stronger bonds between people and inspire a shared sense of purpose.”
Where as Diversity is currently not a CORE value of the university,
Where as Diversity is essential to “foster the creative process, build stronger bonds between people and inspire a shared sense of purpose,”
Whereas it is necessary for UC Irvine to have a culture in which diversity is an essential factor to create a quality university,
Whereas diversity in higher education is valuable component for leadership and professional development and a desirable outcome for educational and career opportunities, Whereas ASUCI is committed to foster a safe campus climate and a constructive dialogue on racism, and diversity among students, faculty, staff, and campus organizations,
Whereas it is important for the UC Irvine community to be a safe space for all ethnicities and cultures,
Whereas it is essential to increase the diversity on campus and provide a safe environment for minorities at UC Irvine,
Let it be resolved that ASUCI supports the implementation of a UC System wide Holistic Admission process in where the institution considers race, gender, ethnicity, and national origin, along with other relevant factors, in undergraduate and graduate admissions, to the maximum extent permitted by the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution, Section 31 of Article I of the California Constitution, and relevant case law,
Let it also be resolved that we remain committed to fostering a constructive dialogue on diversity issues and that we will not tolerate any sort of racial micro and macro aggressions,
Let it further be resolved that ASUCI will ensure that the UC Irvine Campus works towards adopting a culture in which diversity is an important factor for a quality education through advocating and asking the Chancellor to add “Diversity” into the University of California Irvine’s Core Values,
Let it further be resolved that Legislative Council will provide a space for students, faculty, staff, and administration to understand the need to have a diverse campus,
Let it finally be resolved that ASUCI seeks to educate our students and bring consciousness towards students of color issues and other controversial issues. |
