Whereas technology plays a vital and ever-increasing role in undergraduate education, Whereas from EEE to wireless networking, from classroom computer projection to podcast lecture recordings, and from instructional computing labs to library resources and ZotPortal, technology strengthens and enhances the student educational experience at UC Irvine in myriad ways, Whereas state budget cuts have impacted UCI’s ability to sustain current support levels and to stay at the forefront as technology evolves, Whereas UCI is launching the Educational Technology Initiative to protect and expand services, Whereas a fee will be implemented starting winter quarter 2012 for the eTech initiative, Whereas the fee will be $4 per unit for undergraduate lecture courses, up to a maximum of 15 units or $60 per quarter, Whereas UC Los Angeles, UC Santa Barbara, and other universities have implemented similar fees. Whereas the services and technology supported by the fee will be determined in consultation with a committee anchored by strong student and faculty participation, Whereas Johnson Liu, Aaron Tso, and Samantha Bondi are student representatives on the Educational Technology committee for the assessment of student attitudes on the eTech initiative, Whereas Legislative Council serves as the branch of ASUCI that represents each school and its respective constituents, Whereas Legislative Council shall seek student attitudes from each respective school toward the eTech initiative through their desired avenues and divert them towards one of the student leaders on the Educational Technology committee, Whereas the next Educational Technology committee meeting is on November 2, 2011 and student feedback will be taken into great consideration at this meeting, Let it be resolved that Legislative Council works to collect student attitudes on the eTech initiative and either email or get in touch with Johnson Liu, Aaron Tso, and Samantha Bondi. |
