All requests may be typed and submitted to the Executive Vice President no later 5:00 p.m. Thursday in order to be included in the agenda for the following Tuesday. The Executive Vice President reserves the right to delay the Request for Action to a later Council session if the Executive Vice President feels the agenda for the next schedule meeting is full.

Synopsis: Commemorating Professor Frank Sherwood Rowland

Whereas the University of California, Irvine is a nationally ranked research university and has participated in ground-breaking research,

Whereas the University of California, Irvine relies on its exceptional faculty to lead and educate its students on research within its select disciplines, 

Whereas Professor Frank Sherwood Rowland was a distinguished faculty member of the University of California, Irvine whose research brought prestige and honor to this university, 

Whereas Professor Rowland made an impact in the scientific world with his discovery of how chlorofluorocarbons contribute to ozone depletion, a significant problem to this generation and future ones,

Whereas Professor Rowland's ground breaking discovery led to concrete policy action by United States policy makers which led to the official banning of CFC based aerosols in the United States in 1978,

Whereas the impact of Professor Rowland's discovery not only led to a whole new field of study for future academics to explore, but also has benefitted society's health as a whole,

Whereas Professor Rowland's discovery and results after his discovery upholds and exceeds the mission statement of the University of California system, "to serve society as a center of higher learning, providing long-term societal benefits through transmitting advanced knowledge, discovering new knowledge", 

Whereas Professor Rowland prolonged research won him numerous accolades including the Tolman Medal in 1976, the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement in 1983, the Japan Prize in 1989, the Peter Debye Award in 1993, the Roger Revelle Medal in 1994, and most notably the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995, 

Whereas Professor Rowland's achievements not only brought recognition to his own person, but as well reflected well on the University of California, Irvine as a whole, 

Whereas Professor Rowland has unfortunately passed away on March 10, 2012 leaving a deep sense of sorrow within the university and the scientific world that he touched and made waves in,

Let it be resolved that ASUCI Legislative Council, the official representatives of the UCI Student Body, officially pass on its condolences on behalf of the students to Professor Rowland's family,

Let it further be resolved that ASUCI Legislative Council officially commemorate Professor Rowland's achievement in his field and display their gratitude for Professor's Rowland's ground-breaking work that has contributed to the success of the University of California, Irvine and has left a life long impact for the betterment of mankind.
