| WHEREAS, R48-15 "Divestment from Companies that Profit from Apartheid" passed unanimously on November 13, 2012;
Whereas ASUCI. legislative Council stands by its original decision,
Whereas ASUCI Legislative Council wishes to address members of the public and administration on said resolution;
WHEREAS, the letter of position is as follows:
Dear Students, Staff, and Administration,
We, the elected Legislative representatives of ASUCI, stand by our decision to call for divestment from companies that are contributing to the human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territory. We do not support the human rights violation in any region, including those occurring in the occupied Palestinian territory.
We refuse to stay silent as companies profit from the suffering of a group of people.
“Divestment from Companies that Profit from Apartheid” does not attack any individual or people, but rather it is critical of the complicit participation of companies in the human rights violations committed by the Israeli government. We encourage all individuals to refer to the specific contents within the legislation when criticizing our decision, in order to not conflate that we are passing judgement on the conflict, and to reaffirm that we are holding the university accountable for its investments. As constituents of this university, it is our right to express our concern about what investments our university is making and call upon the university to make socially responsible investments. As elected student representatives, our duty is to uphold the university's values, and we stand by our decision to call for the divestment from these companies that refuse to stop profiting from human rights violations.
We ask our administration to consider addressing the various concerns in the resolution including the following:
1. Examining the assets of the UCI Foundation and UC Treasury as mentioned in the legislation
2. Divesting from the companies in the aforementioned legislation and from any other companies that are complicit in human rights violations as long as all of these companies remain engaged in violations of international law and human rights
3. Preventing future investments of such companies
We ask to meet with UCI administration in order to take action towards divesting from companies that profit from human rights violations;
LET IT BE RESOLVED, that ASUCI Legislative Council signs on to this letter;
LET IT BE RESOLVED, that ASUCI Legislative Council officially endorses this statement as its official position on the resolution in question; |
