Synopsis: In Support of Creation of Business Information Management (BIM) Specific Upper Division Classes
Date of Presentation: 6-5-14

Whereas, Associated Students of University of California, Irvine (ASUCI) is a student body that advocates for student concerns; and,

Whereas, it is the duty of ASUCI to represent students’ voices; and,

Whereas, Business Information Management (BIM) is a joint major that is managed by the Paul Merage School of Business and the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Science; and,

Whereas, BIM is a major that has the following description: “As the business environment becomes increasingly global and information-centric, the need has increased for graduates who understand and can use technology that gathers and provides information, who are able to distill and recognize patterns in that information, and who can apply those analyses to achieve business objectives. The undergraduate Business Information Management (BIM) major administered by the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences is a collaborative, interdisciplinary degree program between the Bren School and The Paul Merage School of Business. It seeks to educate students to understand and then apply the theories and concepts of a broad, integrated curriculum covering computing, informatics, business fundamentals and analytical decision-making” according to the website from the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Science; and,

Whereas, there are recent concerns from students from the Business Information Management (BIM) major regarding the effectiveness of their upper division classes; and,

Whereas, students majoring in BIM are obligated and required to enroll and pass classes that are from the “Management” and “Informatics” categories; and,

Whereas, management classes are focused on students who are majoring in Business Administration and minoring in Management or Accounting; and,

Whereas, informatics classes are focused on students who are majoring and minoring in Informatics; and,

Whereas, there are currently no classes that are targeted mainly for BIM majors at UC Irvine; and,

Whereas, BIM majors are obligated to enroll in 5 upper division electives, 3 of which must be from the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Science; and,

Whereas, students from the BIM majors express that enrolling in random upper division electives can be deceiving since students have the freedom to choose easy classes over the harder classes; and,

Whereas, students from the BIM majors suggest the creation of BIM-specific upper division classes that can be focused on project/management product, SAP/oracle, Enterprise Architecture, VBA, and Database Management; and,

Whereas, students from the BIM majors suggest replacing the 5 upper division electives from the major requirements with BIM-specific upper division classes; and,

Let it be resolved that ASUCI Legislative Council acknowledges and understands the concerns of BIM major students at UC Irvine; and,

Let it be further resolved that ASUCI Legislative Council supports the creation of BIM-specific classes on project/management product, SAP/oracle, Enterprise Architecture, VBA, and Database Management; and,

Let it be finally resolved that ASUCI Legislative Council urges the Paul Merage School of Business and the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Science to collaborate with one another to create BIM-specific upper division classes.
