Whereas, “empathy” and “respect” are two of the UC Irvine values; and Whereas, the term “illegal” (hereafter referred to as the “I-word”) dehumanizes and criminalizes undocumented peoples, which is profoundly disrespectful and shows a distinct lack of empathy; and Whereas, the term also has very racialized and racist undertones; and Whereas, the I-word is used by institutions to perpetuate dehumanization, whether intentionally or not; and Whereas, there is currently a campaign going on across the country called the “Drop the I-Word Campaign” that advocates for the end of the use of the term by institutions and organizations when describing undocumented peoples; Therefore, let it be resolved that ASUCI supports the drop the I-word campaign, and Let it further be resolved that ASUCI calls on everyone representing the institution of the University of California, Irvine to use the term “undocumented” instead of the I-word when describing undocumented peoples, and Let it finally be resolved that ASUCI condemns any use of the I-word in reference to undocumented peoples by anyone, whether or not they are associated with UCI.
