All requests may be typed and submitted to the Executive Vice President no later 5:00 p.m. Thursday in order to be included in the agenda for the following Tuesday. The Executive Vice President reserves the right to delay the Request for Action to a later Council session if the Executive Vice President feels the agenda for the next schedule meeting is full. |

| Synopsis: Advocating for Tutoring Resources for the School of Humanities Language Programs | |

|
WHEREAS, the School of Humanities require all undergraduate students to complete up to 2C level of a series for a language other than English and; [1]
WHEREAS, students in the School of Humanities language requirement can be, “...satisfied by a score of 4 or 5 on any of the following AP exams: French Language, French Literature, German Language, Italian Language, Japanese Language, Spanish Language or Spanish Literature,” and; [1]
WHEREAS, undergraduates with familiarity with a language other than English can participate in an Exemption Exam in all fourteen offered languages at UC Irvine and; [2]
WHEREAS, passing the Exemption Exam in a language other than English can exempt you from the School of Humanities Language Requirement and;
WHEREAS, undergraduates with familiarity with a language other than English can participate in an Placement Program Testing to be placed into a suitable course based upon their level and; [3]
WHEREAS, this allows students with familiarity with a foreign language that is offered at UC Irvine to advance themselves in the language of their choice series and;
WHEREAS, despite these many measures to assist the School of Humanities undergraduate populations many start from the beginning of a foreign language series and;
WHEREAS, these students show concern about the lack of resources offer for an important requirement for their degree attainment and;
WHEREAS, those who have been advanced in the series of their choice also shows a need for assistance and expresses the same concern and;
WHEREAS, UC Irvine and UC Irvine’s School of Humanities acknowledges and values the importance of learning languages other than English and; [4]
WHEREAS, UC Irvine 2013-2014 Catalog for the School of Humanities states that the, “...study of language other than English is crucial to fostering critical thinking, objective self-reflection, and international awareness,” and; [4]
WHEREAS, many undergraduates in the School of Humanities struggle with their foreign/second language acquisition and or expanding their non-English native tongue and;
WHEREAS, UC Irvine and UC Irvine School of Humanities does not ensure tutoring resources for the many departments in the School of Humanities that houses the foreign languages at UCI and;
WHEREAS, there is also no tutoring resources for UC Irvine’s General Education VI Language other than English requirement and;
WHEREAS, it is imperative that UC Irvine and UC Irvine’s School of Humanities establishes tutoring resources for foreign/second language acquisition as it affects a large percentage of students on campus for degree attainment and;
WHEREAS, undergraduates of all kinds are encouraged to by the University to pursue any major(s) of their choice and;
WHEREAS, the lack of resources for the School of Humanities language requirement is viewed by many as discouraging for those who want to pursue a Bachelors of Arts degree from School of Humanities and;
LET IT BE RESOLVED, that ASUCI supports this legislation that will serve as an important symbolic resolution to voice out the concerns of students in the School of Humanities regarding tutoring resources for the departments of language housed in the School of Humanities and;
LET IT FINALLY BE RESOLVED, that ASUCI supports UC Irvine and UC Irvine’s School of Humanities to potentially establishing tutoring resources for the languages offered at UCI for students in the School of Humanities and those who must fulfill GE IV Language other than English.
