Whereas, Movimiento Estudiantil Chican@ de Aztlán (MEChA) is a national student organization, whose mission is to promote the education, cultura, and hxstoria of students who identify as Chican@/Latin@ at the UCI Campus,

Whereas, MEChA will host a month-long events known as Mes de la Raza to promote,

Whereas, throughout the month of May, the annual Mes de la Raza will host a variety of events open to all UCI students interested in learning about the Chican@/Latin@ heritage,

Whereas, Mes de la Raza is the largest Chican@/Latin@ cultural celebration, and it is an imperative method for fostering the acceptance of students who otherwise feel underrepresented at the UCI  campus,

Whereas, the long-term goal of Mes de la Raza is to educate students about the realities Chican@/Latin@ students face by promoting social justice and deconstructing systems of oppression,

Whereas,  simultaneously, MEChA aims to honor the cultural roots that bound the heterogeneity within the Chican@/Latin@ student population,

Whereas, throughout Mes de la Raza, we plan on hosting several major gatherings, such as,  Dia de las Madres, Dia de la Familia, Explosion Cultural, and La Voz Gallery,

Whereas, for the keynote speaker, MEChA will be inviting, Alex Espinoza, who is a predominant Chicano Scholar and UC Irvine alumni,

Whereas, we anticipate over 100 students to attend each of these events,

Whereas, ASUCI is the governing body of the University and upholds the value of all ethnic groups within UC Irvine,

Whereas, ASUCI is committed to foster a safer campus climate to all student through cultural awareness and understanding,

Let it be resolved that the Associated Students of the University of California Irvine, fully endorse and support MEChA de UCI Mes de la Raza.
