| Synopsis: Gender Neutral Bathrooms | |
| Date of Presentation: |

|
Whereas, UCI’s Principles of Community recognizes the “multicultural” and “diverse” nature of our campus and calls for “acceptance of one another” in an atmosphere of “mutual respect and recognition” Whereas, Gender-divided bathrooms have long been a point of contention for those whose gender identity or presentation defies the clear-cut gender binary Whereas, Gender segregation is based on the idea that “men” and “women” are the only choices available to individuals. Whereas, All people should feel safe using the bathroom and that the necessary urge to relieve oneself must not end with a painful resignation to either male or female when in public
Whereas, the Human Rights Campaign made a national call to action for gender-neutral restrooms across the country Whereas, Currently, more than 150 campuses have gender-neutral bathrooms Whereas, Since there is no federal law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender presentation or expression, resolutions like this are imperative to ensuring the safety and well being of individuals of all genders, abilities and ages. Whereas, it is not only gender non-conforming individuals who benefit from such legislation. In fact people who rely on the help of family members or attendants of the opposite sex, and parents with children of the opposite sex won’t have to worry about which restroom is the more appropriate to use Let it be resolved that we urge the university to work towards creating gender-neutral bathrooms, either through renovations or by simply changing the signs on single-stall male/female restrooms. Let it be further resolved that policies must be implemented requiring that all extensively renovated and newly constructed buildings include at least one gender-neutral bathroom. Legislation passes 11-0-2.
