| Whereas, video games, in its various forms, are activities that many UCI students and others enjoy playing and, Whereas, video games are a medium of expression for some people as well as serving as a shared activity people of diverse backgrounds can enjoy together and, Whereas, according to the ASUCI constitution, students are granted certain basic rights including, the freedom to choose their associates without fear or consequence and, Whereas, the online social movement known as Gamergate, though attempting to address a legitimate complaint of journalism gaming ethics, has almost exclusively targeted women game developers and women game critics for scrutiny and, Whereas, anonymous, radical supporters of Gamergate have initiated a flame war with detractors of their views and incited multiple accounts of online harassment and verbal abuse on both sides of the argument and, Whereas, in high profile incidents, some female victims of this online abuse and their supporters have been hacked and details of their professional and/or private life posted online, creating great distress and fear among the victims and, Whereas, the radical supporters of Gamergate have successfully silenced many of its targets through such persistent and highly illegal acts, while avoiding punishment for their actions and, Whereas, not all supporters of Gamergate are the perpetrators of this crime, the strong, blatant misogyny of their radical supporters deeply hurt the credibility of their overall cause and, Let it be resolved that ASUCI believes that everyone is entitled to the freedom of speech, though not protecting speech that would cause a reasonable person to fear for their personal safety and speech that would deny others the same right to speak and, Let it further be resolved that ASUCI supports women game developers and critics in their efforts to express themselves through games and critique them as a freedom available to everyone and, Let it further be resolved that ASUCI condemns the words and actions of Gamergate supporters who terrorize women and their supporters in the gaming industry through a collection of threats, verbal abuse, and cause their victimes to lose the peace of mind that is afforded to all people online and, Let it further be resolved that ASUCI pushes for Gamergate supporters to divest themselves from their radical, vocal elements and push for effective solutions to the problems they wish to discuss within the gaming community and, Let it finally be resolved that ASUCI calls upon companies affiliated with the gaming and technology industry to support and protect women so that they may have access to a safe environment in which to pursue their creative endeavors. |
