Synopsis: Resolution Regarding Recent Tuition Hikes
Date of Presentation: December 2nd, 2014

Whereas the Regents of the University of California have recently convened and voted in favor of a 5% cumulative increase in tuition over a 5 year time period beginning in Fall 2015; and

Whereas university administration has emphasized the necessity of such an increase in fees to offset other economic factors such as inflation, higher overhead costs and deductions in state funding; and

Whereas students and registered student organizations alike at the University of California, Irvine have expressed their immense disapproval over the new tuition plan, through either active displays of protest or formal written and verbal expressions of concern; and

Whereas an increase in tuition undeniably increases likewise students’ abilities to afford, to attend and to succeed at institutions of higher education such as University of California, Irvine; and

Whereas it is the invested role of Associated Students UC Irvine’s Legislative Council to voice and represent the concerns of the campus’ student population; and

Let it be resolved, therefore, that Associated Students UC Irvine’s Legislative Council condemns the UC system’s proposed increase in tuition; and

Let it further be resolved that the Associated Students UC Irvine Legislative Council express that ASUCI Legislative Council has no confidence in the University of California Regents and UC President Janet Napolitano, and

Let it further be resolved that ASUCI’s Legislative Council charges both the UC Regents and UC Irvine administration to better manage economically all tuition funds, and to seek more student input in the process; and

Let it further be resolved that ASUCI’s Legislative Council also condemns the state of California’s refusal to provide adequate funding for its public institutions of higher education; and

Let it further be resolved that ASUCI’s Legislative Council encourages both the UC Regents and UC Irvine administration to actively seek alternatives in funding that may alleviate, if not eliminate, the added financial burden carried by this council’s constituency.

Let it finally be resolved that copies of this resolution be sent to the associated student governments of our sister UC’s, to the UC Office of the President, to the Regents of the University of California, to California State Assembly Member Matthew Harper and to State Senator Mimi Walters.
