REQUEST FOR ACTION BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL 
 
All requests may be typed and submitted to the Executive Vice President no later 5:00 p.m. Thursday in order to be included in the agenda for the following Tuesday. The Executive Vice President reserves the right to delay the Request for Action to a later Council session if the Executive Vice President feels the agenda for the next schedule meeting is full.

Synopsis: Response to the RCMP Report in Canada
Date of Presentation: December 11th, 2014
 

 

WHEREAS, in 2013 the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) released a report that accounted for incidents of missing and murdered Aboriginal women in Canada; and

 

WHEREAS, the report demonstrated an over representation of missing and murdered Aboriginal women among Canada’s population; and

 

WHEREAS, the first nations women of Canada are at a greater risk for violence than non-first nation people; and

 

WHEREAS, the homicides of Aboriginal women have remained relatively constant while non-Aboriginal women homicides have been in decline; and

 

WHEREAS, over the past thirty years in Canada there has been over 1,181 incidents of Aboriginal women homicides and unresolved missing persons cases; and

 

WHEREAS, this indicates a lack of care in regards to the safety and assistance of Canada’s aboriginal population; and

 

WHEREAS, aboriginal women are left extremely vulnerable in Canada to gratuitous violence; and

 

WHEREAS, both aboriginal and non-aboriginal women homicides are categorized as other assault and sexual assault; and  

 

WHEREAS, both non-aboriginal and aboriginal women victim’s perpetrators are 89% males; and

 

WHEREAS, this suggest the hypersexualization of the bodies of indigenous women and a lack of support is why aboriginal women are more likely to be murdered and go missing; and

 

Let it be resolved, that ASUCI denounces the violence projected on the indigenous people of Canada with grave emphasis on Aboriginal women; and

 

Let it be resolved, that ASUCI denounces the hyperseuxalization of aborginal women that leds to sexual assaults, missing persons cases and murders; and

 

Let it further be resolved, that ASUCI encourages the continued efforts of social interventions and protection to prevent mass murdering among the indigenous people in Canada; and

 


Let it be finally resolved, that ASUCI urges RCMP to utilize the data to create awareness, and improve current prevention efforts to decrease these horrendous numbers.
