Item Number: 97 Legislation Number (B: Bill, R: Resolution): R50-84
Author:   Sanaa Khan   Second:  Jennifer Lima
Synopsis: student workers against extended hours
Date of Presentation: April 23rd, 2015

Where as, on April 20, 2015, news of extended operational hours for UCI Starbucks located at the Student Center starting Monday April 27, 2015 to Thursday April 30, 2015 was announced to workers via email.

Where as, the beginning of the quarter was March 30, 2015 in which time no update about an additional 24-Hours of Starbucks operational week was announced.

Where as, the workers of UC Irvine Starbucks located at the Student Center, do not support or agree with these extended operational hours during UC Irvine Week 5.

Where as, the push, by the ASUCI President Reza Zomorodian, to get Langston, Gateway, Starbucks-Student Center to be open 24-Hour was not cleared with student workers at those locations nor was a survey taken that reaffirmed his argument that students wanted a 24-Hour facility for midterms.

Where as, upon sending concerns to the ASUCI President on April 9, 2015, our concerns were not followed up with or addressed.

Where as, here was a one-week notice in which we were informed to these changes to our regular operating hours.

Where as, midterms period at UC Irvine extends from Week 2 to Week 10, in which time these extended hours of operation does not benefit students during midterms week 5.

Where as, an institution for education, we should promote healthy study habits, yet enabling students to stay up all-night to study is not promoting healthy study habits.

Where as, almost every employee at UCI Starbucks-Student Center is a student and will have to stay during these extended hours and still attend classes and other activities.

Where as, it is dangerous to the physical and mental health of student workers with the stress of filling the hours of those extended hours of operations and maintaining their normal schedule of involvements.

Where as, it puts students who are economically less advantaged in a situation where they are influenced to take shifts that put their academic and well-being at risk

Where as, Students who also have midterms during this extended hours of operation will be under a high stress environment of balancing school, work, and other involvements.

Let it further be resolved, that ASUCI Legislative Council will aid in the representation of student worker voices through the distribution and the endorsement of the student worker petition letter

Let it further be resolved that Legislative Council condemns the actions of Reza Zomorodian as ASUCI President who failed to work with student workers and address the concerns of student workers.
