Item Number: 108 Legislation Number (B: Bill, R: Resolution): R50-92
Author:   Alvin Phan   Second:  Jeremy Arkules, Tin Hong
Synopsis: A Resolution for the Continuation of the International Student Committee
Date of Presentation: May 28th, 2015

Whereas, international students are a significant portion of the undergraduate population that come from all parts of the world and bring varied and diverse perspectives to campus,

Whereas, international students need to remain engaged on issues happening on campus and within student government to ensure that participation among this population occurs,

Whereas international students at UCI face many unique challenges attending school abroad, and

Whereas the International Student Committee has shown itself to be a useful resource in advocating for the concerns of international students, and

Whereas, it is critical that International students have a multitude of spaces to participate in shared student governance of ASUCI and have an availability to get resources from student government,

Whereas, due to the demographic population of International students relative to the amount of non-International students, it is fairly common for ASUCI to allow for critical needs for international students to pass by,

Whereas, ASUCI has a duty to ensure that international students are receiving the resources necessary to be successful on campus,

Whereas, it is important that ASUCI also directly remains informed as to what the needs of international students are and thus continues a committee that  facilitates the information between the two parties,

Whereas, the International Center is interested in working with ASUCI in continuing this committee which is composed of both international students, professional staff from the international center, ASUCI officials, and Legislative Council members,

Whereas, this committee serves the interest of international students by allowing immediate and dedicated spaces to commit such panning to ensure that a measure of efficacy reaches the international student population,

Whereas R50-17, the parent legislation of the International Student Committee, calls for a revisit during the Spring Quarter 2015 to "facilitate discussion on a renewal process for this Ad Hoc Committee," and

Therefore Let it be resolved that the International Student Committee be renewed for the academic year 2015-16, and

Let it Be Resolved, that ASUCI Legislative Council will continue the committee for international students paired with the International Center to service the needs of international students,

Let it further be resolved, that the composition of this committee will be determined by the Advocacy Committee in regards to the exact number of seats and participants upon the advice of student representatives of the International Center.

Let it be resolved that the International Student Committee is empowered to select new members for the new academic year and explore more avenues to reach out and support the international student community at UCI, working with the International Center as needed, and

Let it further be resolved that the Legislative Council of 2015-16 will appoint two Council members per ASUCI policy, by legislation, and

Let it finally be resolved that following the rules stated under ASUCI Bylaws, Article XIV, Section A, the progress of the International Student Committee will be reviewed at the end of the Spring Quarter 2016 to discuss its annual renewal.
