Whereas, according to UCI campus data, more than 58 percent

of students that enrolled in fall of 2013 were the first in

their families to attend college.

Whereas, first generation and non-traditional students come from different

backgrounds and have different ideas that shape their first

college experience.

Whereas, there is a need for a space in ASUCI where first

generation and non-traditional students can voice their concerns and needs to

the institution.

Whereas, because first generation and non-traditional students encompasses

African- American students, Chicano/a students,

undocumented students and other intersectional identities,

there is a need to create a committee where their needs are

represented in the legislative council.

Whereas, ASUCI has a duty to ensure that first generation

and non-traditional students have the tools and resources needed to be

successful on this campus

Whereas, it is essential that ASUCI is directly informed of

the needs of first generation and non-traditional students

may have and thus, there is a need for a first generation and non-traditional

committee within the legislative council branch.

Whereas, the first generation and non-traditional committee would be composed

of first generation and non-traditional students, ASUCI officials, and

legislative council members.

Let it Be Resolved, that ASUCI Legislative Council will

form the committee for First Generation and Non-Traditional

students to service the needs of First Generation and Non-Traditional students, and

Let it further be resolved, that the composition of this

committee will be determined by the Advocacy Committee in

regards to the exact number of seats and participants, and

Let it be resolved that the First Generation and Non-Traditional Student Committee is empowered to work with

various outreach and retention groups such as, but not

limited to, Student Support Services and Student Outreach

and Retention center, and

Let it be resolved that ASUCI Legislative Council appoints

Miguel Olvera and Ramses Chavarin from its own membership to this

committee, and

Let it finally be resolved that following the rules stated

under ASUCI Bylaws, Article XIV, Section A, the progress of

the First Generation and Non-Traditional Student Committee

will be reviewed at the end of the Spring Quarter 2016 to
