| Synopsis: A Resolution for the Creation of a Students with Disabilities Committee | |
| Date of Presentation: |
|
| Whereas, students with disabilities are a significant portion of the undergraduate population that come from all
parts of the world and bring varied and diverse
perspectives to campus,
Whereas, students with disabilities need to remain engaged
on issues happening on campus and within student government
to ensure that participation among this population occurs,
Whereas, students with disabilities at UCI face many unique
challenges attending school, and
Whereas, it is critical that students with disabilities
have a multitude of spaces to participate in shared student
governance of ASUCI and have an availability to get
resources from student government,
Whereas, due to the demographic population of students with
disabilities relative to the amount of students without
disabilities, it is fairly common for ASUCI to allow for
critical needs for students with disabilities to pass by,
Whereas, ASUCI has a duty to ensure that students with
disabilities are receiving the resources necessary to be
successful on campus,
Whereas, it is important that ASUCI also directly remains
informed as to what the needs of students with disabilities
are and thus develops a committee that facilitates the
information between the two parties,
Whereas, the Disability Services Center is interested in
working with ASUCI in continuing this committee which is
composed of both students with disabilities, professional
staff from the Disabilities Services Center, ASUCI
officials, and Legislative Council members,
Whereas, this committee can help serve the interest of
students with disabilities by allowing immediate and
dedicated spaces to commit such panning to ensure that a
measure of efficacy reaches the student with disabilities
population, and
Therefore Let it Be Resolved, that ASUCI Legislative
Council creates an Ad Hoc committee for students with
disabilities paired with the Disability Services Center to
service the needs of students with disabilities,
Let it further be resolved, that the composition of this
committee will be determined by the Advocacy Committee in
regards to the exact number of seats and participants upon
the advice of student representatives of the Disability
Services Center.
Let it be resolved that the Student with Disabilities
Committee is empowered to select new members for the new
academic year and explore more avenues to reach out and
support the student with disabilities community at UCI,
working with the Disability Services Center as needed, and
Let it be resolved that ASUCI Legislative Council appoints
At-Large Representative Matthew Carlson and At-Large Representative Ariel Barnoy from its own membership to this
committee, and
Let it be resolved that this committee be named “Students
with Disabilities Committee,” and
Let it finally be resolved that following the rules stated
under ASUCI Bylaws, Article XIV, Section A, the progress of
the Students with Disabilities Committee will be reviewed
at the end of the Spring Quarter 2016 to discuss its annual
renewal. |
