REQUEST FOR ACTION BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL 
 
All requests may be typed and submitted to the Executive Vice President no later 5:00 p.m. Thursday in order to be included in the agenda for the following Tuesday. The Executive Vice President reserves the right to delay the Request for Action to a later Council session if the Executive Vice President feels the agenda for the next schedule meeting is full.

Synopsis: Standing in Solidarity with Confess, and a Condemnation of Oppressive Actions

Whereas, Confess is a heavy metal band from Tehran, Iran


Whereas, in November of 2015 members Nikan Siyanor Khosravi and Khosravi Arash Chemical Ilkhani were arrested by the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution and held in Evin Prison until last week, when they were released on bail


Whereas, they currently face a number of charges, including performing as an illegal underground band, writing lyrics against the establishment, and blasphemy- the penalty of which is death


Whereas, this is not the first time this blasphemy law has been enforced, as it has been used to jail and silence several scholars, professors, and even students


Whereas, totalitarian regimes habitually suppress free speech rights and limit entertainment they don't control in order to maintain their undisputed claim to power


Let it be resolved, that ASUCI’s Legislative Council condemns the actions of Iran’s government in their attempt to silence free speech and dissenting opinions


Let it finally be resolved, that ASUCI’s Legislative Council stands in solidarity with Confess and commends them for their bravery in standing up to perform the music they love against an oppressive, totalitarian regime
