Whereas, construction of the Dakota Access Oil Pipeline (DAPL) across the Missouri and Cannon Ball rivers in North Dakota threatens the cultural resources, treaty rights, climate, drinking water supply, and well-being of future generations of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe; Whereas, hundreds of Native peoples and allies across the nation and world are participating in a historic gathering in the Oceti Sakowin Camp to stop the construction of DAPL; Whereas, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers moved the pipeline’s Missouri River crossing from north of Bismarck, a majority-white community, to just north of the Standing Rock Reservation, an Indigenous community, due to the potential negative impacts of a pipeline breach on Bismarck’s water supply, a clear example of systematic environmental racism towards Indigenous peoples; Whereas, ASUCI Senate passed Resolution #51-29 during the 2015-2016 academic year “for the Recognition of Indigenous People’s Day;” Whereas, ASUCI Senate recognizes the responsibility “to oppose the systematic racism towards Indigenous people in the United States, which perpetuates high rates of poverty and income inequality, exacerbating disproportionate health, education, and social crises,” [1] now therefore be it Resolved, that the Associated Students of UC Irvine (ASUCI) Senate condemns the construction of DAPL; and Resolved, that the ASUCI Senate call on the leadership of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations to immediately reverse its stance on DAPL and apologize to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe; and Resolved, that the ASUCI Senate calls on the student government associations of University of California (UC) Berkeley; UC Davis; UC Los Angeles; UC Merced; UC Riverside; UC San Diego; UC San Francisco; UC Santa Barbara; and UC Santa Cruz to adopt similar positions; and Resolved, that the ASUCI Senate is in solidarity with and support the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s opposition to the DAPL.
