REQUEST FOR ACTION BY THE ASUCI SENATE 
 
All requests may be typed and submitted to the President of the Senate no later 5:00 p.m. Thursday in order to be included in the agenda for the following Tuesday. The President of the Senate reserves the right to delay the Request for Action to a later Senate session if the President of the Senate feels the agenda for the next schedule meeting is full.

Synopsis: Support for the Green Books Initiative

Whereas, Green books are an eco-friendly alternative to the traditional blue books offering paper made of 30% post-consumer waste, significantly making use of the 80% of discarded paper ending up in landfills each year

 

Whereas, UCI is committed to a sustainable campus through responsible care of resources and implementing sustainable practices, switching over to green books would help with encouraging for a greener campus

 

Whereas, many students are unconscious of their waste, and it can be especially hard to keep track of it during midterm and finals season when studying is the priority

 

Whereas, in attempts to make it easier on the student body and alleviate deforestation, the ASUCI Sustainability Project Commission believes green books should be accepted in the classrooms

 

Whereas,  ASUCI Sustainability Project Commission is supported by the organizations that are involved with the Sustainability Community WorkGroup on campus which include: The Global Sustainability Resource Center, UCI Dining and Hospitality, Habitats for Humanity, American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists, Aquaponics UCI, School of Social Ecology, CalPIRG, UCI Health and Wellness Center, EarthReps, and Global Partners for Sustainability

 

Whereas, the listed organizations have been involved in the consultation towards developing this policy.

 

Therefore, let it be resolved that ASUCI supports for a change to Green Books and the elimination of procurement for Bluebooks.

 

Therefore, let it further be resolved that this legislation will be sent to the Chief Officer of UCI Procurement, Snehal Bhatt, and UCI Chancellor to represent students support for a greener community and request for their support in this eco-conscious change to the community.
