Item Number: 14 Legislation Number (B: Bill, R: Resolution): R53-14
Author:   Tin Hong   Second:  Gurneel Boparai, Cary Xiao
Synopsis: Disapproval of the Failure by UCI to Produce a Report on the Rescinded Admissions in the Promised Time
Date of Presentation: 2017-10-05

Whereas, beginning on July 20, 2017, 503 students received notification that their admission to UCI would be rescinded due to various technicalities and, [1]

Whereas, affected students were unable to contact or received vague responses when contacting the UCI administration concerning this issue and,

Whereas, there were students who reported logistical issues concerning the reception of their transcriptions as they were rescinded despite sending in their transcripts on time and, [2]

Whereas, many new Anteaters have been deeply hurt and confused at the esoteric processes the school used to come to this decision and,

Whereas, on July 27, 2017, ASUCI Executive Cabinet issued a statement and petition regarding the mass amount of revoked admissions for the Class of 2021 and, [3]

Whereas, 638 affected, currently enrolled, or incoming students, concerned parent/family members, concerned community members, alumni, and ASUCI members signed this petition and,

Whereas, on August 2, 2017, UCI Chancellor Howard Gillman issued a statement about the “decision to withdraw admissions to hundreds of students” and, [4]

Whereas, Chancellor Gillman planned “to have a preliminary report within 60 days” and,

Whereas, 60 days from August 2, 2017 is October 1, 2017 and,

Whereas, there have been no further emails from the UCI administration by October 1 to follow up on the promised report and,

Whereas, the Associated Students of the University of California, Irvine has the power and a responsibility to advocate for the rights of students at UCI and,

Whereas, the Chancellor is mandated to give the full report at the UC Regent's meeting in November, but has not yet updated students and,

Let it be resolved that ASUCI disapproves of UCI’s present failure to produce a report on the rescinded admissions in the promised amount of time and,

Let it be resolved that ASUCI calls for the UCI administration to properly address the remaining parts of the aforementioned petition, A JOINT STATEMENT ON THE RESCINDED CLASS OF 2021 APPLICATIONS and,

Therefore, let it finally be resolved that a copy of this legislation will be sent to UCI Chancellor Howard Gillman and UCI Vice-Chancellor Thomas A. Parham.
