REQUEST FOR ACTION BY THE ASUCI SENATE 
 
All requests may be typed and submitted to the President of the Senate no later 5:00 p.m. Thursday in order to be included in the agenda for the following Tuesday. The President of the Senate reserves the right to delay the Request for Action to a later Senate session if the President of the Senate feels the agenda for the next schedule meeting is full.

Synopsis: Issuing Minor Certifications at UCI

Whereas, the undergraduate students at the University of California, Irvine, have the option of adding a minor in addition to their current undergraduate degree,

 

Whereas, the University of California, Irvine, offers 74 minors,

 

Whereas, within the past 5 academic school years, the University of California, Irvine has issued 7,095 minors, 

 

Whereas, an average of 1,419 undergraduate students add one or more minors to their major each year,

 

Whereas, minors provide extensive knowledge and application about a subject due to their interdisciplinary nature of including introductory and upper-division courses,

 

Whereas, minors are beneficial to undergraduate students whose studies and career paths overlaps in various topics,

 

Whereas, most minors require a minimum of seven courses,

 

Whereas, successful completion of a minor is a recognizable accomplishment and one that undergraduate students are proud of, 

 

Whereas, the accomplishment of completing a minor is currently only shown on an undergraduate’s transcript,

 

Whereas, the undergraduate students whom are completing a minor desire a form of recognition beyond their transcript,

 

Whereas, many universities offer certification for completed minors,

 

Let it be resolved, undergraduate students at the University of California, Irvine, who successfully complete a minor, are awarded a certificate recognizing their accomplishment

 

Let it be further resolved, this certificate is smaller in size (5 inches high by 7 inches wide) to that of a diploma (8.5 inches high by 11 inches wide), 

 

Let it be further resolved, one certificate is awarded per minor completed,

 

Let it be further resolved, the minor certification is effective starting Winter graduation of 2018,

 

Let it be further resolved, the ASUCI senate endorses faculty to issue minor certifications.
