Item Number: 62 Legislation Number (B: Bill, R: Resolution): R53-56
Author:   Gissel Enriquez   Second:  Jagmanpreet Kaur
Synopsis: UCI in support of 100 percent renewable energy
Date of Presentation: 1/16/18

WHEREAS, the climate crisis is a serious threat to current and future generations here at the University of California, Irvine and around the world; and,

WHEREAS, the Paris Agreement calls to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century below 2 degrees Celsius and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius; and,

WHEREAS, available wind resources could power the nation 10 times over and existing solar potential could provide more than 100 times current energy needs; and,

WHEREAS, too much of UCI’s energy comes from fossil fuels that pollute our air and water and alter our climate; and,

WHEREAS, UCI is already a climate leader by acting to reduce carbon emissions and promote clean energy, including transitioning the bus fleet to be fully electric; and,

WHEREAS, over 679 colleges and universities have made commitments to reduce global warming pollution by achieving carbon neutrality near mid-century; and,

WHEREAS, UCI can get 100 percent of its energy from clean, renewable sources by harnessing solar and wind resources and taking advantage of innovations in energy efficiency, green transportation, energy storage, and other technologies;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Associated Student Government here assembled, and the signatories of this resolution who represent a diverse set of students, faculty and staff, that Chancellor Howard Gillman of University of California, Irvine should commit to achieve a goal of 100 percent clean, renewable energy no later than 2050;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the UCI will avoid taking actions that could increase the use of fossil fuels or delay the transition to 100 percent renewable energy;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of California, Irvine supports actions to promote clean energy and reduce fossil fuels.
